Book band Peach?

shoelaces · 23/07/2018 21:01

Is this just made up? DS moved to peach for the last week of term but no book home.

Pretty sure last colour was made up too.

Black then Peach? What ORT level is equivalent so that I can supplement appropriately over the summer?

If you give me an example of a few peach book band books I can research their level

Thanks for the offer, that's the exact problem I have. He's been moved up to Peach today, but no book sent home. So I can't do my own version of benchmarking. If it's harder or longer or both.
Schools advice is just to keep reading over the summer. My DS is lazy and will do them minimum if he could get away with it!

Tbh with the summer I think t is a case of reading anything just to alleviate the summer slide. Maybe try to summer reading challenge, do the six books then sign up online to continue and get digital badges

How old is ds? Only reference I found for black band is that it's level 16. Do the reading Challenge with the library and let him choose books that he enjoys reading.

There’s more than one set of bookband colours, and there is a set that has black much lower down at about yr 2/3 Level. It’s followed by beige rather than peach, but maybe they didn’t have the right coloured stickers.

Alternatively, they could just be making up their own colours.

It’s black followed by beige here too, which could be a bit peachy... it tend to be for lower ability year 3s.

Ours is turquoise, purple, grey, black in ks1.

Sounds as if they may be using the Cliff Moon system where black is Stage 8-9 and beige (peach?) is 10-11.

Our gold band uses peach stickers (must have been cheaper in the pack). DD1 was rather disappointed in this - was fancing a bit of bling and shiny when she got moved onto gold.

It must be black then beige with DS calling it peach. He's end of YR1 but working in greater depth for reading. I just want to keep him engaged and enjoying reading over the summer. Thanks all Smile

What did black come after?

You must have an idea of what the previous books were like to give you an indication of what he can manage, but if he is working in greater depth he is obviously a good reader. And if he is at around Lime level - which other posters suggest - then realistically there won't be that much that he can't read. Building stamina for reading longer texts is often key at this stage. I would just go to the library, sign up to the reading challenge and let him pick whatever he fancies - being engaged and enjoying reading for pleasure comes partly from being able to find what interests you and choose your own books. He may be more motivated to read a book of entirely his own choosing than one provided by the school or by you.

For comparison, my own end-of-Y1 has completed Lime and they become "free readers" at this stage. He is currently enjoying Michael Rosen's Uncle Gobb books, and previously has read the first two How to Train Your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell. He also loves Captain Underpants, Roald Dahl, Isla Fisher's Marge in Charge books, amongst others. He spends 50% of his time reading non-fiction too, and adores the Usbourne Lift-the-flap books on a variety of topics (How things work and British History are the current favourites). He occasionally asks us the meaning of new words, or checks that he is reading difficult words correctly, and we still read together every day too. When he reads non-fiction I get him to set me a challenge quiz afterwards to see if I know the answer to three questions about new facts he has learned and he loves doing this to try to "catch me out!"

Thanks everyone. I'll try to remember these in the right order

Pink
Red
Yellow
Blue
Green
Brown
Black
Peach/Beige?

I was happy I knew where he was up to, until Brown.

I think he needs to work on stamina and will get him down to the library. Grin

Ours goes in a completely different order:

Pink, Red, Yellow (their goal for end of Reception), Blue, Green, Orange, Turquoise (end of Y1 goal), Purple, Gold, White and on from that - the really top readers (like 2-3 of them) in Y1 finished the year on Gold. (I'm not a total sad-act - DD1's reading diaries from the year came home the other day and are still in the "filing" pile on the dining table)

DD1's on Gold, and Greater Depth for reading - but will she hell read anything other than bloody Rainbow Fairies at the moment (and she gets very pissed off if you sit making up mickey-take fake fairies)... I'm just glad she's reading, take her to the library and unleash her to pick what takes her fancy.

Oh yeah - and joke books.

Kill me now. I'm sending her with the joke book collection to stay with MIL for a week. Revenge.

Yours fall off ort really early. Has he tried anything like storey treehouse or dogman yet? Can he read horrid Henry early readers by Orion?

Report
shoelaces · 25/07/2018 18:04

He has Horrid Henry but doesn't want to read them.

He loved captain underpants and all the Project X books. Obsessed with Charlie and the chocolate factory and has enjoyed a few Roald Dahl books.

He gets bored easily and will stop reading after a short time. I think working on longer stories he can read easily may be the way to go. Build stamina I think.

Try 13/26/39/52 etc storey treehouse. These are longer but similar style to captain underpants.
Also ds6 enjoys graphic novels and although others turn their noses at it they can have rather complex plots and can be pleasurable to read.
Ds also likes non fiction a lot more than fiction and will steal his fathers physics books.
