PG tv series - Merlin

Just wondering if I've been THAT parent today. DD brought a letter home from her teacher for next year saying they are doing Anglo Saxons next term and teacher wants to show Merlin tv series to class, as it's a PG needs parental permission.

I couldn't remember a lot about it but reviews online seem to indicate about 10+ age level.

DD is 8 and fairly sensitive (The bfg gave her nightmares for example & didn't want to watch robin hood prince of thieves on tv last weekend as the battle scences were too gory for her).

I asked teacher which episodes were being shown this morning - if it was just a couple maybe watch them with Dd and reassure her, but it was series 1 and maybe series 2. Teacher then said she'll not show them at all, and change her plans.

Now slightly worried about impact this will have on my relationship with DD new teacher for the next 2 years.

I bet you are not the one and only parent to say no to this. I bet she's had previous experience of a parent saying no to a PG. I would have, purely because my child is sensitive and it wouldn't be appropriate for them.

As long as your dd's wellbeing was the motivation behind the decision, and you weren't rude or nasty to the teacher, I don't see why the teacher would hold it against you. Also she said she would change her plans so she sounds like she's ok about it.

If it was classed as suitable for all it would be rated U, and the teacher wouldn't have asked.

Thanks for that.

Very true regarding the u rating, i wouldn't say no to any pg but just considered the probable impact of this one on DD.

Yes i was very polite about it, hopefully there'll be another resource they can find.

Two series of a tv show in school? I'd be saying no on that alone, that can do that a home

Surprised they suggested it, there’s a general no pg rule at our primary.

Imagine the delight of your dc being set tv watching homework!

First series is ok imo, later ones not so much. Likewise one or two episode would be ok but not more.

I think the decision is entirely up to you really and you are perfectly entitled voice your concern.

Our DS at 8 happily watched from the first episode and really enjoyed it from beginning to the final episode and didn't find it scary.

I suppose it would very much depend on the child though!.

They might be doing anglo-saxons next term but series 1 and 2 of Merlin will take some watching and if they do, they will be doing precious little else in the term in the way of writing, reading, maths etc.
Little snippets of the series showing scenes may be appropriate, whole programmes just sounds wrong.

As a teacher, I sometimes think that a PG film would really fit well with a topic but feel quite uncertain as to how children will react to it especially as I haven't got my own kids. On these occasions, I would send a note to parents asking permission and feel happy to get feedback to help me make the decision one way or the other. Certainly wouldn't be offended by any parent who said no.

And I would only plan to show little clips and snippets rarely the whole film or episode.

10 - 20 hours tv that is about not real things like magic to help with history? Er...no.

NOt quite sure how the teacher was going to justify spending the time to watch 2 whole series of entertainment programmes in school though ?
Snippets from show - yes. Potentially one episode of a show if it were a topic tarter or something, but not sure what they are going to learn from the entertaining, though not exactly historically accurate TV shows for weeks on end ?
