Male NQT considering KS1

Hi all,

I'm currently a trainee teacher on final placement and I have secured a position for September as an NQT. The position was advertised as a KS2 position and tbf I have always seen myself as an upper KS2 teacher - however in the interview they asked how I would feel about KS1 position?

They won't be stating which teachers will be in which year group until June (I suspect I wil be in yr6 as I used to be an unqualified teacher in yr6 previously) but it got me thinking even though I've personally never seen a male teacher in ks1, I am doing final placement in ks1 at the moment an do enjoy it.

Do you know any ks1 male teachers, if so how are they generally received? Very interested in views from parents and teachers.

Both of mine have had a male teacher in KS1 (2 different ones), I think it’s very positive. Say this as a parent and governor

I know 2 - both well received (parent perspective)
That's not enough for me to spot a trend - other than they were received any differently than the women and didn't seem to do things any differently either. I think all teachers bring their own personality to the classroom.

DD=darling daughter (DS-> son). Our school used to gush that it had THREE male teachers (25%) and 1 even taught the younger end of the school (yr3). Best of luck with your plans.

My children have had male teachers in Reception and Y2. Both excellent. No one I know was anything other than pleased to see more men in primary school.

It's a pity there aren't more male teachers so go for it! Nothing wrong with female teachers but much better not to have any institution almost entirely staffed with either women or men.

I would like more male teachers in ks1. Our school have male teacher in ks1, but unfortunately, my ds didn't get him and very disappointed. He was very popular among children. I only heard great things about him from other parents.

Our infant school has a lot of male teachers and tas. To be honest, I've never really thought about it, why wouldn't there be male teachers in all year groups?
We even have a male worker at the preschool.

A KS1 teacher still has to be a good teacher. I've worked with lots of men in KS1 who think we are 'crying out' for male teachers and that they are doing a massive favour to education by being in KS1. If they are not a good teacher it doesn't matter if they are male or female.

Dd had the same male teacher in year 1 and 2. He joined as an nqt. He was fantastic and I've never heard a bad word said against him by either parents or children.

DS had a male teacher in y2. That teacher is now teaching y1 and there is another male is y3. This is in a very small primary of only 6 classes. R, 2, 4/5 and 5/6 have female teachers and 1 and 3 have male teachers.

My favourite teacher at my tiny primary school of 6 classes was Mr Aldridge in y2. He read Beaver Towers to us which everyone who had him remembers.

Good to hear such positivity.

Definitely agree that it is ultimately about ability but some people (I assume) will make a judgement before they have a chance to see your ability. Or perhaps it's paranoia on my part - think the elephant in the room is what some ppl think about men with being with younger children - again could just be my paranoia tbf.

There is a very good and very popular reception teacher at my son’s school. He’s also fairly young. The head teacher is also male (it’s an infant school).

Dd had an excellent male teacher in year 2, who had taught yr 6 the previous couple of years. School is quite diverse (culturally & class). Never heard anything negative about him being a man in the playground from anybody.

My husband has been a KS1 and Reception teacher for the last 15 years and loves his job. He's always been very popular with parents. I've not noticed him have any problems from being a man.

oh we had a fantastic male NQT in year one a few years ago, adored by the children, great fun and very good. think all our others are in KS2 now but they do move around. I never heard anything negative towards the idea, most parents were actually praising it as great to have male role models. Our school has a lot of male staff.

It doesn't bode well that you are entering the profession with a sexist attitude. It makes no difference what sex any of the teachers are for any of the classes but I would be surprised if they put an NQT in year 6 because it's very tough getting the children through SATS.

Report
Gudhai · 25/02/2018 20:33

@Fairenuff - the fact that KS1 lacks male teachers, and that academic research suggests that this both exists and is exacerbated by societal perceptions (both male and female). I think my question is a fair one.

I worked full time for two years as an unqualified teacher in yr 6 before reaching a point on the payscale where it made more sense to get qts.
