Places to do with the Romans

My children are learning about the Romans in school at the moment, and are very keen to visit Hadrian's walk. As we live in the SW this maybtake a bit of planning/saving so I was wondering if there are other good places to go that bring the Romans to life a bit? Or any good museums with exhibits about the Romans?

I remember being taken to some Roman baths when I was a child but have no idea where they were!

Well, Bath is the obvious place as you are in the SW!

Fishbourne Palace also. There is Roman stuff all over the place if you look for it.

Bath - went here with the kids a couple of years ago, really interesting

St Albans - went on school trip when my DS was doing the Romans, interesting museum and mosaic floor - Verulamium I think it was called, as we were a school party we had a workshop to handle actual Roman artifacts with a museum worker.

I'm sure there must be loads though

Chedworth Roman Villa near Cirencester.

I don’t think the Romans got much further south than Bath, although happy to be corrected.

Go up to the NE, you can’t move for Roman stuff up there!

Look into Chester. They can walk the walls and a Centurion guide will “march” them around.

Cirencester Museum is a good starting point.

Roman sites have been found in Cornwall.

Jordan hill roman temple Weymouth - is a bit of a walk from Bowleaze cove which is just outside of Weymouth town centre.

Edgware Road /Watling street is a Roman Road - though there isn't much Roman to see but huge stretches of it are super-straight.

Museum of London has Roman-related content and you can find odd bits such as cripplegate fort in the surrounding area www.britannica.com/place/London/History#ref360556

Fishbourne Roman Palace near Chichester is great - very well preserved and really interesting. They also do an excellent programme of activities in half term. My DDs (aged 10 and 7) loved it. Planned to have a quick hour but ended up staying for 4.5hrs as there was so much to do. The cake in the cafe is nice too Blush

I live in St Albans (am a teacher too). I wouldn't recommend trekking all this way just for Verulamium - the museum is interesting but small, there are a couple of bits of wall dotted, there is also a mosaic in the park, the most interesting part is the Roman Amphitheatre but again it's quite small (and probably only interesting from an adult perspective) I'm not sure it's worth a 4 hour + drive. If you are passing (doing a UK roman road trip) then it's worth a stop.

Silchester near Reading gives an idea of scale of a Roman town, including an amphitheatre. St Albans is another. Bath is the most obvious one. There are some recently excavated villas in Somerset, although not sure how accessible they are. If you go to Fishbourne also take in Bignor for its mosaics.

Chester is great for Roman things.
There's the city walls, the amphitheater, roman gardens with examples of early underfloor heating, Deva Roman Experience, and The Grosevenor Museum
And if you get bored of all things Roman, Chester Zoo is well worth a day out

Wow! Thank you for all this! We have friends in/near a few of these places so may plan a few trips plus it sounds as though some are Day trippable - thank you!

I love getting into their projects ( though I always realise how little I know about anything!)

Museum of London. Haven't been there for years, but London has some amazing Roman history which continues to influence it today. You can also see and touch the old Roman wall in the Tower Hill area.

If you head up to Chester also stop at Wroxeter. London has standing Roman walls and foundations reused in later buildings.

DD is doing the Romans at the moment and they've been to Caerleon (which is only a few miles away for us, luckily). Hoping to go to Bath at some point so she can see the Roman baths.
