Hi MNs! I'd like to have recommendations for independent schools in Watford and surrounding areas. I'm looking for a school with small classes, a school that is academically strong, but not too pushy, I mean, a school that helps a child to become a happy and confident learner. Is your child's school like that? Comments on any schools in Watford and surrounding areas will be mostly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Aldenham is superb. It has the reputation for not being academic but in reality that means that the children who leave move on to the schools they are suited to and the last 2 years have had outstanding 11+ results, all leavers went to the top academic schools in the area. It's a real gem, a warm school which gets the absolute best out of each child in a way where they never feel stressed or overwhelmed. Also EdgeGrove but it's extremely expensive

Lockers park at Hemel Hempstead is a traditional prep that prepares for 13 plus common entrance. There are several at Berkhamsted including the prep at Berkhsmsted School itself.

Thanks ujerneyson! We didn't have a chance to visit Aldenham on their open day yesterday, but we'll definitely book a visit on that school. Thank you!

You have Edge Grove & York House as coed schools.

Lots of boys Prep schools depending on your actual area and willingness to drive - MTS Prep and more coed but depends on how far you want to travel.

Berkhamsted is pushy and a lot of children are tutored outside of school. They also cull kids at random intervals if they are not meeting the grades (hence I would imagine all the tutoring).

Don't get me wrong it's a great school, but only if your child fits the mould.

Hi mums,

Iam also looking for a prep school and looking at High Elms Montesorri, Longwood in Bushey, York House and Edge grove. - any other suggestions or recommendations by parents who have their child attending these ? Friendly school, not too pushy, but pushy enough to challenge, not too sporty either, nurturing and the above - I'm looking for a school with small classes, a school that is academically strong, but not too pushy, I mean, a school that helps a child to become a happy and confident learner. Is your child's school like that? .... There's also st Hildas and St Magarets. Needs to be Coed though ? any advice would help. I need to feel that my child is learning and time given to nurturing and teaching and not just all about games and sports all week.
