Homework at weekends - AIBU?

Hi all,
hope I can get your opinion on this as I just had a massive row Angry with DH over when DD should do her homework!?
He doesn't get involved to oversee that her homework gets done but he is of the option she should NOT do any homework at the weekends and just relax!!! ( DD & Myself often get edgy with each other over homework and it can upset the family piece)

I should probably point out DD never had very much home work until recently when she started year 6. (she never had a tutor but I had her signed up to an online math program)
DD gets her school homework on Fridays and it needs to be done and back in school the following Thursday morning.

This means she get her homework when the Weekend begins. If nothing is done Fri/sat/sun - then we have a massive rush to get things done on mon/tue/wed after school when she is tired and I really have a battle on my hands.

AIBU to think it would be a good idea to get majority out of the way using a bit of time when DD is relaxed Sat/Sun am??? The she'd have
more time relaxing Mon/Tues/Wed after school when she's tired??
BTW we are talking around 3 hrs homework a week - Appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks

I know that majority of MNetters disagree on homework in primary, but good routine make life a lot easier in secondary, imo.

My ds does't get 3 hours(!) worth of homework, but he would normally get on with it as soon as he get it on Friday. He sometimes do homeworks on Saturday and Sunday, if we have nothing planned on weekends.
Very rarely he will leave it until Monday/Tuesday, but he will do it in the end, without nagging from us. We always held the stance that it's up to him to do it or not, but from start of KS2, it became compulsory and he need to do it during breaks if he hasn't done it at home.

Looks like you are getting a lot of response on AIBU. Why the need to post 2 exactly the same thread? Confused

Perhaps 30 mins a day, with Sunday 'off'? DS works best straight after school, but DD would rather do hers straight after tea every evening before a bath and bed. They do the same subject on the same day each week for a routine.
3 hours a week seems like a lot. If some of this is spellings and/or times table practice, could it not be done on the journey to and from school to reduce the load slightly?

That's actually pretty reasonable of the teacher - giving you all the homework in one go so you can find the most suitable time for you.

No harm for your child to do it at the weekend, if that's what works best. 3 hours homework is not a huge amount when spread out across the week either. As a primary teacher my class receive about 30 minutes work a day at the moment.

Actually I'd agree with Liadain, that 3 hours a week isn't a lot.
My ds gets worksheets/research homework on Friday which need to be handed in on Wednesday. But he gets reading 20 mins aloud, and online comprehension and online maths programme to do everyday. So, it will add up more than 3 hours a week. And it's not that much, if you spread out across the week.

By year 6 age I must say I had no involvement in homework except at DD's request (when she needed testing on something or brought something up in conversation, like the projects she regularly has to do on the week's main news stories). She does her homework straight after school mainly - she gets daily homework but some she has a full week for, other things due the next day.

DH would rather homework be done on a Friday after school if due on Monday (we have two younger ones too) but my 10 year old (who would be year 5 in the UK) often does his at 6am on a Saturday because he is awake anyway and not allowed downstairs til 7am :o

What time does your DD get up at weekends? Do you have a lot of stuff going on usually or do you just tend to relax? I think there are quite a lot of factors influencing when might be the best time for a specific child and family.

Only definite is to have it all finished before dinner and bath/ shower time rolls around on Sunday!

This all depends on the child..

My DS year 6 had a maths sheet ( took 15 mins ) which he did Thursday evening..

Spellings he had a go at Saturday am ( they are repeat of last year)

Played some online games for rest today.

Also reading which he does most days..

If it is too much then tell them she made an attempt however..I find if it is relaxing there is a lot of time to do a bit here and a bit there.

My DS will be away at cub camp next week so unlikely to complete his homework but he will make an effort ..That is good enough for me.
