I'm confused about shirts & polo shirts both being needed?

Ok in that case I'd increase 'shirts' to at least 4. Unless you've got a very clean child you'll usually find they come home with paint/felt tip/dinner/unknown all over them every day only if you don't mind constant washing of course, I'm more an 'enough to get me through the week' sort of person.

Ps same with cardigans. I've always had 3 because they will lose at least 1 of them at some point.

Def get more shirts. I would have at least 3 but probably 5.
I think pinafores are easier for little ones as they don't have to try and pull them up/down they don't get all twisted around but that is just my opinion and if she prefers skirts then fine. Plus they protect the shirts from getting stained with pens, whiteboard markers and spag bol. The jersey ones are good as they stretch and have no zips or buttons for them to do.
Get a spare tie, they will lose it every time they do PE and not find it for 4 days.
At least 2 cardigans, one on and one being washed.

What else for PE? Ours need joggers, shorts, polo shirt, hoody and trainers (not canvas pumps incase it's wet outside). PE kit also acts as spare clothes bag incase they have an accident or spill something all over themselves.

If you need any branded/logo stuff then check out the school parents FB page if they have one. Parents may be selling second hand stuff towards the end of the term.

As a reception teacher I'd say the rucksack wouldn't be needed. Book bag is ample for carrying book, letters, hat etc. Some children in my class bring rucksacks but have hardly anything in them. Book bags are much more practical.

Most schools have spare clothes in case accidents. Ours has spare pants, socks, tights etc and there is always PE kit to change into.

Will DC need a drink bottle?

Ok, I've upped it to 2 cardigans and 4 shirts (if I need to I can always but more as and when).

They've asked us to label everything so I'd feel better using labels but probably next term or next year I'll use pens.

I have a look for those jersey shirts as she will not do buttons (I'm actually planning on getting them 2 sizes bigger so she can just open 2 buttons and slip it over her head.

I've seen a 2 in one pinafore dress that may work better for the 1st term?

The splash suit is basically instead of the apron. They wear them and the wellies when they wanna play out ❤. I'll get 3 cardies and 3 ties.

Also, how will I teach my 4yo to tie a tie? It took me ages when I was 11 starting high school!!

Thanks @RedSkyAtNight I didn't even think of that. We live over the road from the school so I wasn't going to buy a coat specifically for school, just a thin one, but she'll need one for playing out!

On the tie - if sold as a proper tie, the very few primaries i know with ties have the sort on elastic - the best option is to tie it for them, with a knot that 'slips' easily so if getting changed it can be loosened and then retightened when getting dressed again.

Schools are roasting these days, probably won't need vests.
YY to 2 cardigans, they get left behind, usually come back in the end.

Rucksack is needed imo, despite teachers at our school saying don't. they weren't the ones carrying lunch bags, water bottles and all sorts of random items all the way home.

Getting eyes tested is a good tip if you haven't already. My DD had a sight problem and would've developed a lazy eye had we not gone early enough.

Dresses with zips are so much easier. As are polo shirts rather than button up shirts! Even now 3 years on my daughter hasn't got time to be faffing with buttons!

Swimming kit?

One top for pe was fine, but they often came in packs of two anyway.

Ours only had a book bag in the early years, no bigger bag. The only other thing they took in regularly was packed lunch in its own bag, plus swim kit.

On the bag front, it depends a lot on how the class teacher arranges things.

It is common in reception classrooms, where staff are likely to be the ones changing reading books, for all book bags to be collected into a box in the classroom at the start of the morning. Rucksacks etc would not fit.

However, in other schools, there is a reading folder (often a plastic zipped bag) for the reading book and reading diary only, which the child takes out of their main bag and puts in the appropriate box, before putting the main bag on their peg. In that case, a larger bag in which water bottle, lunchbox, art work being sent home etc can all be packed is entirely practical.

Try to find out what system is used before purchasing a bag.

Bear in mind, though, that school cloakroom areas can be tiny (and will already have PE bags and coats in), so go for the minimum size bag that you can fit everything needed into.

Summer dresses? Quite a few wear those in September.
