Dyslexia Action is in administration

Found out yesterday that Dyslexia Action has gone into administration. It is a leading charity that supports children and adults with specific learning difficulties and I am a psychologist that did assessments for them but was not employed by them. I just wanted to warn parents about this because you may have children that have tuition or assessments booked and there is no one to let you know. It completely shut yesterday with no warning for staff or any of us. Many of the psychologists and teachers are still available to do the work so contact me if you want to know more.

I dont understand why they have gone into administration. They have a management team (some turnover though) and a board of trustees. Were there no flags or warning signs?

I presume there must have been but there were no warnings for staff or people like me who kept working and invoicing them. They owe me thousands. It is the poor parents and students waiting for reports that I feel sorry for. They took lots of payments for tuition for the summer term that I doubt parents will get back unless they paid by credit card.

Thanks for the heads up. I've just checked their website.

Oh dear. Feel sorry for the psychologists and parents who will be owed money.

I know when we had Dd assessed it cost over £400 and this was a decade ago. Iirc we had to pay in advance, I remember struggling to get the money together. Would have been gutted to have paid and not had the assessment.

Hmmm, you can get to their shop page, but not to their website or Facebook page. Very odd.

Yes, shocking news. No notice or clue for staff there. I do dyslexia assessments as a specialist teacher for Dyslexia Action and enjoyed working there. Just received a letter about it today.

Please message me if you are in the London area and need an assessment.

Apparently Dyslexia Action Wales will continue independently.

Hi I am so shocked at the news. I also conduct assessments for Dyslexia Action and received a letter this morning saying they have gone into administration. There were no warning signs at all.

Please send me a message if you are in Manchester, North West and need an assessment for all ages.

Such a shame. They were really helpful with our first child. I also feel sorry for the parents who wont get their report having spent such a lot of money (I remember how hard it was for us to afford it), and also the lovely psychologists who will have done the work and not been paid.
If it helps anyone here, for our second dyslexic child we used these people

They were brilliant for assessments (better than DA in my opinion) and we found such an amazing tutor through them.

Dyslexia Action Wales will be continuing and is open for business as an independent company, though has had to move from the premises. Info can be found on their Facebook Page and will eventually be on the website currently being constructed. Dyslexia Action Psychologists are also all alive and well and continuing to offer assessment services around the country independently. A list of ex DA psychologists who are still offering dyslexia assessments can be found on the Facebook page "Dyslexia Action Psychologists"

It was such a sad day on Thursday when the doors closed for Dyslexia Action. I was one of their consulting psychologists and I was conducting an assessment at the time. It came as a real shock for teachers and psychologists alike, and we are trying to reach out to our clients to let them know.

Psychologists and teachers in the Midlands and Eastern regions (from Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Lincoln and Chelmsford centres) are regrouping so that we can continue to provide a service.

A Facebook page has been set up today so that psychologists and teachers can be contacted, it is called 'Dyslexia Action Associates'. This group will serve the Midlands and eastern counties.

Please do stay with us through this challenging period, so that our reformed organisation can evolve and provide the full range of services once again.

Currently we are offering specialist teacher and also full psychologist assessments, specialist tuition, dyslexia awareness sessions and training, workplace consultations, and a range of holistic therapeutic services for individuals with dyslexia.

You can find is at 'Dyslexia Action Associates'.

Many thanks.

It's good to hear that other regions are following suite and re-organising themselves to carry on giving the service that they gave through Dyslexia Action. I just wish that DA had given us warning about the forthcoming closure so that we all could have been prepared, and set up our businesses in advance, such that clients and staff wouldn't have lost vast amounts of money!

What an awful thing to happen. I really feel for all involved especially those owed money.

We had been trying to get an assessment for DS3 sorted and some support for DS2 but they had been dragging their heels - I'm relieved now that we didn't hand any money over.

That is really awful :( All of the staff feel really sorry for the clients, it is a terrible situation. So sorry.

If you paid by credit card you should be able to claim your money back from the card company. If by debit card it is also worth talking to your bank. If by bank transfer however, there's no hope.:-(

Thanks KRainbird for your advice. I paid with my bank debit card I don't think I will get my money back.

I worked for Dyslexia Action. I worked my socks off and really transformed the way we did things and re vamped the centres.I have been a teacher for over 25 years and know how desperate some parents are to help their children. So many children/ young adults are in need. I have been deeply upset at how quickly things happened. My staff and consulting educational psychologists have all met over the last few days and we are going to continue with the great work that we have been doing for a long time. We have decided to all work together to continue to help children who need help to achieve their goals. If you live in the West Midlands and would like tuition or an assessment please get in touch through the following websites which have been set up:
Dyslexiawarwickshire.co.uk and
senconsultancy.uk
or contact me on 07738554921.
We will be setting up a national framework and I will post information of the new website when it is live.

"Albert Einstein- Dyslexic scientist" I'm afraid that's one of those myths

Report
whelan12 · 19/04/2017 21:32

Yes but I am thinking positively and he was a very clever man who 'thought outside the box' like a dyslexic brain would think. So Myth or not... think the quote sums up what I would like to say. Thanks

mrz · 19/04/2017 21:40

Perhaps omit the dyslexic scientist part (for accuracy)
