Sports Day Training Regimes

If there's one thing I think we don't often talk about as mums but which we all know goes on, its training regimes for our 'young un's' for sports day...

With the big day coming up in a few months in most UK schools, let's talk about how we're putting our young ones through their paces. With training probably starting right about now, this might be a good place to share tips for those going for gold!

Grin

The only training is for the incorrigibly competitive for the parents' race.

No one else gives it a thought. Ever.

I imagine it's not talked about because it doesn't happen.

Don't be ridiculous.

Gosh yes - just imagine, if you were writing an article or doing a feature, wouldn't poking Mumsnet for copy be a great idea!

I'm sure that's not what this OP, in her first ever post, is trying to do though.

I don't train specifically for the mums' race as I find my general conditioning training is sufficient for victory...

But this does go on. Mums were even talking about it at the school gates just now (though they were laughing about it with me and not going into specific details about their own training plans).

We're not talking doping and bench pressing, just getting kids up early, getting them motivated and yes, maybe making them practise with an egg and spoon until they get it right and don't drop it...

I send DP into the parent's race. He gets quite enthusiastic, and he's a big lad (ex rugby player) - he accidentally took out 3 other competitors when doing the turn at the end of the field last year.

As to the kids, we're on a solid regime of cocoa pops and haribo, combined with not picking up their laundry or toys, and letting them pick their own outfits. This ensures that their spoon skills (for the egg race) are top notch, and they're well prepared for the obstacle course and sack race.

just getting kids up early

I'm sure their teachers are ever so thankful for this. Nothing like a classroom full of children who haven't had enough sleep.

I call bullshit. Jog on.

I still haven't gotten over the full moon with neon pink thong 100 parents were treated to halfway through the mothers race last year.

I'm just glad if I remember to put in the -stupid- family day picnic they insist on doing afterwards.

Last year neither DH or I could go ( as a teacher, I was at my own schools sports day) ,then I had a phone call from school to say the boys had no lunch as we had forgotten . The shame...

ok, 2 be fair, DD has a friend whose mum is a bit pushy for the X country runs... DD & her mate make a lot of jokes about it.

This has to be tongue in cheek.

The father's face does get competitive-our infants solved that one by deciding they would skip with infant size ropes. Grin
The mum's race is also competitive but in a different way. All mums are competing to volunteer to be the one looking after the younger siblings and not take part.

We get lots of posts on primary about parents wanting to boost DD's maths or DS's reading confidence and asking for tips, games or apps that could be used to help. And lots of good advice is given.

Now someone comes along and asks for help boosting the confidence for sports day and the poor parent isn't getting any help at all.

Of course, there's no way I'm giving up any secrets, you might be in DD's school ;-)

DS practices for sports day, additional runs undertaken, lots of use of exercise bike, but this is self inflicted preparation, I definitely don't even suggest it & the school seem to do less & less PE as the years roll on.
