DD (y5) came out of school saying she hadn't been allowed to do PE today because she'd forgotten her shorts. So she spent an hour sat at the back if a y6 class reading. I get why the teacher wouldn't allow her to do it and backed the teacher up saying she really needs to remember her kit. But she said 3 of her friends offered her spare shorts/jogging bottoms and the teacher still said no.

The thing that's bugging DH is, if it had been maths and she'd forgotten her pen then she would have been allowed to borrow one rather than sit at the back of the class reading!

I'm not planning on saying anything to school but would it irritate you?

It is annoying, but by Y5 they should be starting to take responsibility for remembering their stuff, and if missing the lesson does the trick then it was a useful lesson.

DD loves reading. She's more likely to 'forget' her kit again now she knows the punishment is to read alone for an hour

The problem is that the teacher may have then got complaints from parents. The children may be happy to lend but not necessarily the parents.

We have so many children that "forget" their pe kit. We have spare, but that's not the point. It's the same people time after time, even after the teacher sent texts home to remind their parents about having kit!

Some children say their parents have told them that the are not allowed to wear the ,"spare" kit, and yet don't provide their own!
Last week we had 8 children(for one session) without kit in our year2 class. What are we supposed to do? It invariably ends up with me listening to them read, taking me away from the only free time I get in a week to do my planning for the groups I take.
If it was just 1 person on an odd occasion it wouldn't be so bad, but it is ALL the time.

We used to let children borrow spare kit until we had a parent complain that they didn't want their child lending kit. She kicked up a bit of a fuss so now it's your own kit or no PE.

My ds would probably loan his kit and then pretend he'd forgotten his to get out of PE!

He'd then sit at back if class pretending to read

Your DH has a point about the pen. But I know plenty of secondary schools who give detentions for forgetting stuff - pen or kit.

Having seen the mountains of lost property including expensive coats and shoes as well as uniform and PE kit that yr5/6 leave behind every where I would totally agree about learning responsibility. I run kids sports clubs and get very tired of some DC turning up without essential kit and expecting to borrow spares bits that i end up buying and providing. It's a total PITA. I used to keep spare kit etc for the DC whose parents maybe couldn't afford stuff. Ironically it's never them that are the culprits.
I think it's an important lesson in taking responsibility for belongings and the consequence. In my day the punishment was to do PE in your knickers. No one ever forgot their kit.
