Won't it depend on whether or not they have introduced the new curriculum? As I understand it, independent schools can do what they want. What has your school said it was doing?

Yes ours were as they had to follow EYFS as far as I was aware

New curriculum hasn't affected the EY ... It has stayed the same. Most would use the emerging/ expected / exceeding

From what I can see my son's school used things like: very impressive, good, etc.

Ours did, and they asks to hold on to DD's work, as they were expecting some sort of inspection (I think they we're talking about moderation), the letter with her EYFS grades even said that they had to give these grades out.

Ours doesn't follow the EYFS and doesn't use expected etc. We have a very descriptive report.

Ours did. Then had a descriptive section under each one.

Some private schools have opted out of the eyfs so they don't need to assess against the early learning goals. Does the school give the 15 free hours/vouchers for up to five year olds? If they do, they haven't opted out and you should have received their level against the elgs.
