Which of the two sentences is the more formal and highlight the words that show that it is more formal.

I practise on my violin every night so I'm allowed to go to the concert.

Day says he might take me to the concert, but I'm not sure that he will.

I understand which is more formal but am unsure which words make it so? anyone?

I would say the first is more formal, e.g. use of the word 'allowed' rather than 'can'.

I would say the second is less formal, e.g. use of the word 'Dad' rather than 'my father'.

That's a strange question. Can I ask which year group it is? Neither of the sentences are what I would call formal. I have no idea what they would consider the 'right' answer. As TeenAndTween says, 'Dad' is informal, but then the second sentence uses 'that' and the first omits it, which could suggest the second is more formal. confused

Thank you for your views. As TeenAndTween suggests this is what Ds and I thought. MrsKCastle it is Year 6 work. I didn't understand it either as there is no real distinction between informal and formal.

They both have 'I'm' which is a contraction. In formal writing, it should be 'I am'.

Yes Galena, I agree so it doesn't make sense to me.
