I just watched my DS on his second full day in reception walk across the playground, round the corner, along the side of the school and disappear out of sight before he reached his building. He was looking quite bewildered and although he knows where he had to go I think it's a big deal making them go on their own. Is it too much to ask a teacher to line up her class and take them round together when the bell rings?

I will get used to this BTW, I just think awwww they are so little.

I ignored them telling me I couldn't take her.
Think teacher/parent contact (even if just a smile)i s v important.

There is a sentry on the gate - no one gets past her!!!

It is a massive school (four class intake) so I agree it's too difficult to manage all those parents and buggies etc etc BUT they used to line up in the playground when the bell rang and now they just all wander in...

I can't stand leaving DS in the class room as it is, let alone having to let him get there on his own as well!

I will add apart from one morning last week, DS probably wouldn't care if I was there or not, I am much more of a wuss when it comes to these things than he is!

They changed it a couple of years ago. The kids used to play in the playground then the bell rang and they all lined up with their class then the teachers came out and took their class in.

Changed it as it "makes a calmer start to the day" not letting them run around in the playground first thing. I think this is stupid but who am I?

kbear, it would break my heart. DD has been doing part days in reception so far and has sobbed every morning for three weeks. Next week is full day, but the parents still take the children into the class at 0845, and leave at 0855 when the bell rings.

Incidentally, at the Junior School which is next door, the teachers AND THE HEAD come out into the playground, the kids line up and they file in together.
