Do you think this is too much homework for Year 2?

My DD and I are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of homework she gets every night. It's not a one off. Every night she gets something like this:

1. Count in 2s from 0-32
   

1. Worksheet on synonyms: read a short explanation of synonyms. Connect 4 pairs of synonyms by drawing a line between them (adore / love, sweater/jumper, truck/lorry, etc.). Find a synonym for 4 words: boat, ugly, exhausted, pebble.
   

1. Read aloud 6 pages of a text book about children around the world and their education systems
   

1. Finish learning off by heart a 20 line poem (which has been homework every night since Monday)
   

How does this compare with what your children in Yr 2 have to do?

In year 2 my DC had

• read every night
  
• learn 10 spellings and write into sentences (optional) - week to do this
  
• a weekly "task" varied from collecting things, to writing to maths to ...
  

I think your homework sounds more than that but probably not overly more - other than the learning a poem (which you've had a week for) they are all quite short tasks - this is assuming they are appropriate for her ability of course.

This doesn't even come near what my DD gets and she's in Y5! That sounds way too much to me. In Y2 my DC had a reading book for the week, one maths sheet (per week) and maybe something written (each week). And I thought that was too much - but I'm not much of a fan of homework anyway! Is it a state school or private because that can make a big difference?

We are meant to read to our dc every day, we have ten spellings per week to learn, and a homework log every half term. Yours does sound a lot!

That's loads

DD does reading every night, a few words to learn each week (they don't seem to be tested though) and one more 'project' type hw OR a maths task every couple of weeks.

I'm really happy with that - DD enjoys the project stuff, over half term she has to create an informative poster.

Oh she also gets a maths game to bring home each week but that's only because she is having extra support in a small group.

DD has 10 spellings a week and a maths exercise (usually a worksheet, sometimes a maths game). She also has 2 reading books a week.

DS is year 2. He has spellings 15 spellings to learn, 5 sentences to write and a maths sheet as homework each week, alongside reading every day.

Yours seems like a LOT.

DS is in Yr 2. He has reading every night (usually one fiction and one non-fiction book per week), 10 spellings per week, and a Learning Log that we get 5 days to complete (Fri to Wed) - it contains 2 mini-projects, and usually takes collectively a couple of hours. It's a lot, but the learning log can be fit in around family commitments which I appreciate.

That seems loads to me. DD is in year 3 and doesn't get homework every night, or even every week, she gets a project to do every term which usually has to be completed in about a month. This term she had to do a diary entry in role as someone living in ancient Rome. She had a week to do this. She then had to do a powerpoint presentation on a particular aspect of ancient Rome, connected to her diary entry. 3 weeks to complete that one. She won't get anymore homework now until after Easter.

Regular reading and 8 spellings to learn each week. That's generally it. Occasionally there is an extra thing to do but rarely. Thankfully our school doesn't think homework in KS1 is necessary or good.

Like loads when written out like that. It's more the relentlessness of it. Every night a maths thing, a grammar worksheet, some poetry and some reading. Once a week on top if that 10 spellings. Every night.

We really struggle to fit it in and there's never a night when DD can kick back and play out or do nothing. Sometimes we have to finish homework in the morning before school as she cannot get through it in the evening.

In Yr 2 last night dgs had 20 fairly simple sums. A piece of reading with 5 comprehension questions and a work sheet with pictures of twigs to label.

Spelling is ongoing 20 words given on Friday and tested thefollowing Friday.

We get a poem and 10 spellings to be done for the following week, but all the rest is always for the next day, so no room for manoeuvre or tiredness.

Private school?

It sounds far too much, my DDs had nowhere near that in Yr2. In fact even my Yr8 DD gets a day a week off.

Blimey! My ds has reading. Some days we do it some we don't if he is tired. Spellings and number bonds for the week we do a quick chant whilst eating breakfast. That feels like plenty to me. He is only 6!

DD is in Y2 and has just been given her fifth piece of homework ever, apart from reading, which is strongly encouraged to be done every night, and spellings (which seem entirely optional and are not tested). She is doing fine in terms of attainment.

Usually a maths sheet, spellings once a week and we are expected to read at home lots.

Often we don't do the spelling or maths - we have little spare time and home life balance is more important

In your shoes id inform the teacher that you have decided to limit the time your child does homework to 15 minutes a night and please can she let you know which ones are more important

Reading every night (he brings a different book everyday and he reads it, we listen). (We also read to him before bedtime but that's not homework just family routine).
10 spellings to practise with a test once a week.
1 time table per couple of weeks with a test at the end.
Sometimes he gets project work, but we get several weeks to complete it.

Far too much every night! That's a week's worth each night really.

Our school gives out one printed sheet each week in year 2. It contains a talking activity to prepare for writing (rerelease a story or think of describing words for a poem), a maths activity and something short and written. Also reading and spellings are expected.

My Yr2 son has reading every night, spelling every night, then in addition he gets numeracy on a Monday to return on a Tuesday, Science on a Wednesday to return on a Thursday and then on Friday has I piece each of numeracy and science and 2 literacy pieces to do over the weekend.

Have to say it is a little struggle as I work full time, we don't get home until 6pm, and weekends are spent juggling around various sporting activities!
