We're moving in the summer to Paisley in Glasgow and would like some advice on good Catholic primary schools within either paisley or a reasonable drive. Thanks in advance.

Whereabouts specifically in paisley? Being the west of Scotland we have an abundance of catholic schools and non denominational schools most within walking distance of housing

Hi Kerrie,

Good luck with the move but please be aware that Paisley is not in Glasgow. It is a completely separate town. Check out www.paisley.org.uk/

Paisley is run by Renfrewshire Council and you will get a list of all the schools on their website. www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/webcontent/home/

Do you know where in Paisley you are moving too?

Hi we're likely to be living around the glenburn area of paisley and believe St. Peter's would be our nearest catholic primary, but have seen some excellent catholic primary schools in East Renfrewshire, such as our lady of the missions, st cadocs and st josephs. Just wanted an opinion of local catholic verses a drive to East Renfrewshire schools. Thanks

You will be lucky to get into schools in East Ren. The system up here is completely different from England, most children go to their most local school.

You have to register your child with the local school and then make a placing request to the local authority (the school will give you the form if you ask them). You will need to give a reason for the request, for example the school that you want is nearer grandparents/carers for after school care is often the reason.

If there is space in your choosen school then you should get in but as I say, it's not the norm up here.

Also, don't underestimate the drive between Glenburn and East Renfewshire, it can be a right pain if you have to do it twice a day.

I'm sure a more local mner will be able to clarify but iirc it looks like a straightforward drive and only about 15mins but can take anything up to 45mims in peak traffic.

Just remembered as well that there will be an issue with funding. You will be in Renfrewshire and pay council tax there. You want your child to go to East Ren but why should East Ren council tax payers pay for your child's education?

Then you will have Renfrewshire saying that they will not pay East Ren to educate your child as they can provide suitable education in your local area.

Again someone with more precise knowledge may be able to advise but that is my understanding of the current situation.

OLM, st C and st J are already full from their own catchment, I wouldn't think you'd get a placement transfer from Paisley without a very good reason.

isthe, yes and with all the new building going on in every available green field the school capacity is already under pressure. Sad

Hi, I live close to glenburn but know little of their schools and more so the catholic ones, had you come a little further west in renfrewshire I may have been able to help.

What I would say is though that east renfrewshire schools are very good but are generally over subscribed. Renfrewshire is currently going through a estate management consultation just now which should be finalised by May, therefore a school you choose May be moved to another location. In renfrewshire a building does not make a school.

I would also say it's not feasible to drive from glenburn to Houston twice a day. Paisley traffic is v.busy especially at school hours.

Hope you get somewhere :-)

Hi Kerrie,

Any more info on your move?

Very much doubt you will get into East Ren. In Renfrewshire your local schools by distance are

St Peters
St Charles
St Marys
St Pauls
St John Ogilvie

All above schools feed into

St Andrews

There was an issue with St Pauls in 2010
