elemantary2 ...I wish I had known then what I do now but in retrospect my DD just was not ready and I should not have taken her to the assessment but she took it all in her stride. However, 3 years on, she is almost like another child and has come a really long way so I am glad I let her develop at her own pace.
I was also working full time so nursery choice was based more on hours and distance from station etc. I never really assessed her in the sense that I did not know what level she should be working at for her age versus what she was actually doing.
So when we went for the assessment I got talking to a mum whilst we waited and from what she told me I quickly realised that perhaps (and only perhaps) I should have done more prep work. Not surprisingly, my DD was not offered a place. After some feedback I was told that whilst socially there was no issue at all, she just was not ready for high school yet. From what I can gather from my DD, I think some of the following things may have played a part (though I could be totally wrong !);
Writing her name (she could recognise it but I saw drawings from other kids that had names and neat colouring). She is also left handed so her pencil control was non-existent pretty much. She could recognise letters but could not blend words e.g. cat
Lack of focus/concentration (again this was limited...if she was doing a puzzle and she was not getting anywhere she would just find something else to do)
Naming items (e.g. parts of body, fruits, sames) and pointing to items - this was limited.
Draw a picture/Colouring - same with pencil control and not colouring inside the lines neatly
Number counting - she could count to 20 but if you took 1 away and added 1 she would not know how that worked. Also no way she was able to count coins.
Stories - What happens next? What everyone was feeling in story etc - again this would be limited.
Building lego towers - she did not like doing this at the time so probably did not on the day !
Subsequently, I went part time from work (I was going to anyway but decided to do it earlier than I can anticipated) and inevitably with some more time on my hands I started to spend more time with her to figure out how she was doing...simple things like number counting, puzzles, colouring, reading, shopping, role playing etc and after some investigation I quickly realised that I needed to move her to a nursery that was linked to a school and would provide me with proper feedback on how she was doing and how I could support her at home to progress further. The nursery she was at simply could not provide me with the feedback I needed. I am glad I made the move at that point - best decision I made !
I am sorry this turned out to be a REALLY long post but hope it helped in some way .
