Is a non verbal reasoning score of 118 good? Very confused!

DS2 is five and in year one. We have been given a non verbal reasoning score of 118 but I don't really know what this means. I know it is lower than DS1 had at this stage of the year in year one. His was 128 which we were told was good. Is 118 good too?

Can't you ask his teacher? Wouldn't we have to know which test he sat to answer?

I think it's a standardised test hence the question rather than hours of googling.

I've just read something in the MN archives about 120 being good so sounds like he's on the right track.

I guess it depends in the test

The ones my children do below 80 is cause for concern/SEN. 100-120 is average and 130 is exceptional.

This sort of test result is always centred at 100 and they tend to follow similar distributions (bell curve type of thing). A typical 'stanine' description of the distribution is:

Description St % pupils percentile score
Very high 9 4 97+ 127+
Above av. 8 7 90-96 119-126
Above av. 7 12 78-89 112-118
Average 6 17 59-77 104-111
Average 5 20 41-58 97-103
Average 4 17 23-40 89-96
Below av. 3 12 12-22 82-88
Below av. 2 7 5-11 74-81
Very low 1 4 4- 73-

So, yes, its good. Smile
(Quite how meanigful these tests are at age 5 I'm not sure, probably not worth overanalysing yet.)

It would relate to a score close to 80%. It's a good score. Why is the school giving an NVR test? Is it for 11+ preparation?

Not 11+ just yet, he is only five!

I don't know why they did the test really other than to assess where he is. It's a selective school so they test quite frequently.
