Good Educational Apps for Key Stage 1

We've just bought an ipad for all the family but I haven't managed to find anything great for the children, education-wise that isn't American, apart from Timmy Time numbers which becomes tedious quite quickly.

Any got any ideas?

We use Math Magic, which is American but still good! Also pocket phonic, from the UK. Though they are not so educational, cut the rope and cat physics are good fun!

my son was enjoying sky view last night... lookig at the stars and learning about constellations etc and its free :)

we also like barefoot atlas

and also ocean media have some great books on there - we've downloaded some of the dr seuss which are really interactive

Squeebles. dd1 (Y4) and dd2 (Y1) both play spelling one (you can make your own lists), dd2 also plays the maths addition one, and dd1 the multiplication one.

Try 'first phonic sounds' on the iPad, it's an education based app for kids learning the alphabet, all the letter sounds are in an english accent!

Has lots of really nice animations too, would highly recommend

Fudgy Bear is a nice early years one and the Mr Thorne does Phonics ones are good too.

My dcs both love a game called "Where's my water?" - although it looks like a game rather than being specifically educational I think it is great for both logical thinking (doing actions in the right order and understanding the impact of different actions) and for basic science/physics (predicting the trajectory of jets of water and getting them to the right place) - my 4 and 6 yr olds love it and I know some older ones that do.

I'm sure somebody on this thread recommended Dragonbox algebra - I came back to thank them because it is great and my 6 yr old is doing really quite complicated algebra and loving it. The post has disappeared (or I dreamed the whole thing...)

We recently bought Little Poets and my son loves it - an app teaching poetry with very nice cartoon animations. He is five and he is about right age for it.

My 5 year old started spellings last term. I had trouble getting him to do them. I tried to find an app that would allow me to put in the school spellings and play a game. I couldn't find one, so I wrote one. It is called 'Spelling Hangman' and is available on the App Store (SM). He uses it every day and it has really helped his spellings.

It's not an app but Khan Academy videos are excellent reaching tools. His explanations of concepts are done from so many different angles that my DD gets it.
