Hi all, I am trying and failing to teach my yr 1 son to do his school tie himself. Is there a rhyme he can use to help him remember what to do. He is left handed which seems to add to the problem.

thanks

I don't know a rhyme but I do know you can buy ties on elastic, that's the way forward

This is how you tie a tie: The rabbit hops over the log, the rabbit crawls under the log, the rabbit runs around the log, one more time?because the rabbit is trying to outsmart the fox, and the rabbit dives into his rabbit hole

Never ever elastic. Never!

Elastic!!! DD has just gone into year 3 and although she mastered laces at the start of Year 2, she only got the 'real' tie thing during the summer holidays.

I taught it by just saying:

Round your neck, with little snake down
Wrap the big one round and round,
When big snake comes up from his den,
Push him down to sleep again! (using the front bit of the knot to cover him up)

I showed her this a couple of times and just left it, then the first day of school she came into our bedroom, tie almost perfect!!! Not looked back since.

I just continued to show them until they got it. Similar to laces to be honest.

There is no way I would agree to a elastic strap tie and yes I can see the difference.

I think the tie tying is really odd. At Middle School DS2 has to tie his tie as it's a normal one. DS1 at High School has a clip on one. Confused

Y7 DD2 is mystified by her tie and her shoe laces.

Top sets for everything, but totally floored by a bit of stripy fabric.

Molly - might be a silly question, but if he is left handed, does he need to tie the knot in mirror image from all the standard ways? I'm not left handed, but I can imagine that it would be very hard to tie the knot the "wrong way round".

The rhyme we use is

fatty over thinny
round again
up through the tunnel and
down the drain !

I start out by holding "thinny" steady for them while they do the rest.

DD had mastered hers (after a fashion...) by Christmas in Reception

DS (who has just started YR) is amazing and just about has it sussed already.

Our school don't sell ties on elastic so they have to learn to tie a real one from day one.

We did:
"Over once, over twice
Up through the hole where your neck is...
And down through the hole you just made"

It took my dd one week to master her tie in year 3 (when she started needing to have one), so I am certain that almost any (nt) child can master it if they wish to. She only has one hand.

Sorry cant help. Have no idea how to tie a tie myself. Dd can do hers (yr 6) but ds (yr 4) has an elastic one.
