Yr3 reading.

My child hates reading to me with a passion. According to her school she's a very good, able reader, she also likes reading to herself or her cousins or dolls. Basically anyone but me.

I choose not to make this into a battle so do other things with her such as writing notes or word games or magnets on the fridge. And a couple of times a week she will consent to snuggle up to me and read one of her Dr Seuss books or the gruffalo ect, books that she is familiar and comfortable with. However dd has been getting called up in class and told she has to read more and harder book's. This is despite me explaining to her teacher.

Am I wrong to continue to let dd set the pace? If I forced her to she would read ability level books but it would be stressful and upsetting.

DS was the same when in Y3 and it was a school requirement that children read their school reading book (i.e. ability level book) at least 3 times a week to an adult.

But ... the school coupled it with a carrot/stick approach. Children who did the reading got rewards, children who persistently didn't lost golden time. This was sufficient incentive to get DS reading.

Does DD get any "punishment" at school for not reading? Might it be worth discussing this with the teacher? I'm with you, I'd be loathe to "battle" a child to get them to read each night, I'd rather make school the "baddie".

You say she will read familiar books? What are the books that get sent home like? My dd was exactly the same but tbh the school reading books were soooo boring. She has recently changed schools and has been given what I would say are proper story books and she lest mind reading them at all.

I you let her choose a book from the library would she read that?
