Has anyone tried Komodo maths?

Looking for something for 5 yr old DS to do over the summer holidays. He's just finished reception and is interested in maths and numbers at the moment. He reached level 9 on the EYFS for all the maths criteria and we've done the keystage 1 stuff on the BBC bitesize website.
Has anyone anything good or bad to say about Komodo maths? Are there any other websites or apps that you would recommend for Keystage 1 level maths?

Hi Messtins wow, you are quick off the mark - Komodo only launched a couple of weeks ago. I'm a working mother who isn't great at maths but my partner is. We've designed Komodo around our own kids who are 7 and 9, but it's suitable for ages 5 to 11. Our aim is to make it effective and enjoyable without keeping kids at the screen too long. If you would like to try it out for 3 months for free, we'd be delighted to hear what you think. Just get in touch with us via our website komodomaths.com and quote your mum's net user name.

Hi sandfordmum. Weirdly, my dh looked at Komodo last night (can I say though that the roaring dragon scared the wits out of us coming through on loudspeaker Grin).

I have emailed you via your site. I love the sound of it being personalised. Good luck...

Hi All, I've put aside five 3 month free trials - just drop me an email via the komodo maths site and I'll let you know how to get the little ones learning.

Thank you very much - I've signed up. Can I make an initial comment about browsing the site as a prospective parent that it would be great to be able to see a sample lesson for a few different age groups to get a feel for how it works. I know you offer a 14 day trial but only to those who are prepared to sign up in the first place.

Hi all
Just to say I am a mum who is rubbish at maths (had to repeat my Maths O Level!) and still have to count on my fingers. So when I came across Komodo for my 7 year old I was really impressed by it. It's mix of graphics and incentives means that she is asking to get onto the computer to use it. I would recommend it whole heartedly.

I second messtins. I only just registered for this. The graphics are great. so are the colours. I love the simplicity of your site. So far, so good.

Hi. I've signed up for this - last night and have set up the account. Am waiting for an email from Komodo so that we can get going - my DS is super keen. Shameless bump of an old post here Grin

Do any of you have feedback yet? I'm really interested, but it's quite a lot of money without really knowing--especially given 2 children in my household! Or if anyone knows of any more free trials available, I'd love to give it a go.

Hi. Yes! I signed up for my child about 4 months ago. I like it.

Hi thebalas,

We've been using Komodo for 4 or 5 months and I thoroughly recommend it! Here are a few notes:

I've see an improvement in progress and confidence - which I put down to Komodo

We use it for 20mins three or so times a week. The app sends you reminders so you don't forget!

It uses short timed practice exercises and it's not a game. - I like this because the kids concentrate and I can see what they're doing.

There are guidance videos for new topics and help videos explaining how to use the various features.

It is nicely designed - easy to use and navigate. Uncluttered and tasteful are the words I'd use.

When a learner scores three A grades in a row they skip forward onto the next stage so they're kept challenged.

There's a great reward system and "komodo messaging" system to keep kids motivated

We use it on ipad but it works on computers and other tablets

There's a free trial I think - check the site to be sure //www.komodomath.com

I second what Milzy said. Komodo is really excellent and I had previously tried a lot of other websites. What I like is that it's very clear and straightforward, and focuses on building basic numeracy skills. My DD's confidence has soared. I also appreciate the blogs to parents (finally, someone explained "chunking"!) which are very helpful.

I'm reanimating a zombie thread here Grin

Can anyone using Komodo Maths advise me what the sound effects are like? DD has sensory issues with sound and as a result gets near-hysterical at the thought of using Splash Math, which we've just bought - and all that has is a pink hippo saying "no no no" if you get an answer wrong... I'm thinking of getting something else but if you have to be roared at by a dragon to use Komodo, that's out!

Hi Longtalljosie,

It's Jane here from Komodo maths and have just noticed your post - just to reassure you that there is definitely no roaring by dragons (or any animals!) in Komodo.

We have quite a few users with sensory issues and the feedback from parents is that they really like the clean and uncluttered design. Plus, you can customise a lot of the settings so that the learning experience is just right for your daughter.

Hope this helps.

Jane
