Has anyone seen an amazing Primary school musical? We want to put one on, (mainly Y5/6) and want one with really catchy songs, a strong storyline (that is age appropriate) and some good (but not overly demanding) speaking roles! I would really appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Our Y5's did "The Pepys Show" based on Samuel Pepys.

I was just going to say The Pepys Show :)

DS1 did it 7 years ago and I still remember the songs.

We are doing Terry Pratchett's The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents - really good. Published by AC Black, I think.

Ours did Joseph and Oliver. I would love to do Annie - they could have boy orphans as well!

I secondpirates of the Curry bean. My DD school did it last year and I laughed so much i convinced our music teacher in my school to do it this year. It has some catchy songs and proper story and the chance for some good comic laughs if the kids get the timing right.

Our school always does a very good show, but I think Oliver was the best by far because it has a lot of catchy tunes, plenty of group singing and dancing, and real acting character parts for the non-singers.

And a good story, with a happy ending.

Olivia is really good. Look at it on youtube. It has Oliver, Eliza dolittle, Sherlock Holmes in. Lots of really good parts.

Bugsy Malone was brilliant for our eldest daughters yr 5/6 musical, lots of parts for everyone to be involved and great fun.

Third for Pirates of the curry bean, our school did it and it was fantastic, a real good laugh from start to finish, good speaking roles and songs that can showcase any singing talent there may be.
Our school have done some fab Christmas ones but I am guessing you are after end of summer term ideas. This year they are doing an Olympic themed one, the only thing I have seen is the song list and it seems to be about the Gods and the Titans. It doesn't seem to have the funny that Pirates had but knowing our school,\ it will be fantastic :)

Yes, Joseph.

Maybe it was the same production RandomMess saw. The (very experienced) acting head described it as "awesome", and it truly was. I blubbed throughout Blush and parents stood up and cheered for quite a while at the end. You would have thought the children performing were from some top prep school, whereas in reality they had spent most of the year stropping/ throwing tables (or maybe that was just my DS).

And I'm blabbing again just thinking about it.

My now 18yr old was the mock turtle in alice the musical when she was yr6. It was good fun!

Ds did the Rocky Monster Show which was also fun anf completely bonkers- it was not the "rocky Horror show" as he kep telling us to start with LOL

DD2 did Gel the musical . She had a big part so we were v proud of course but it wasn't as good a musical as the other 2.

My DD was in Gel last year and I complained to the Head about it - I thought it totally inappropriate for Primary aged children.

I put on Treasure Island with year 6 last year and that was the best one I have ever been involved in - can't remember the publisher, but it was fab.

Nappyshed why did you object to Gel?

OK it's a bit pants as a musical but the story line is the usual one gang fights another but something happens and we pull together and "gel" . It's as old as the hills- Romeo and juliet (without the lovers LOL) really. It's a good message to put out to late primary aged kids, surely.

And who could ever forget the chorus line of high kicking Roman soldiers in the Boadicca number- that was the best bit!

Our school is doing Pirates Of The Curry Bean too :). I haven't seen it and probably won't (it's years 5 and 6 doing it and DD1 is in reception) but I was walking through the hall when they were having rehearsals and it looked quite good!
