Year 1 maths, is this normal or correct?

I could do with some advice regarding my DC's maths curriculum. Weekly mental maths tests, to be taught at home. is adding double digits up to 100 including carrying forward normal for year 1? It just seems soo much at this age. I'm told this is normal for preping for 7+? I'm worried.

When you say adding double digits including carrying forwards, are you meaning calculations like 37+25?
Look at the method they are using.
Are you being asked to teach them how to count on in jumps of ten and one to reach a total? Or partition and then add the tens and units? Or mental vertical addition with carrying?
I'm surprised that it is being taught to the majority of Y1, whatever other MN genii offspring are doing.

My yr 1 Dd is doing jumps of 10 & 1 to teach a total, as Dust has mentioned. Nothing mote advanced than that at the moment thank god .

Dustin the wind, in a few lessons (maybe4?) they have been adding vertically carrying over, units first followed by 10's. T& U have been covered for about a week! In the MM test it says they are to add the 10's then the units together. Remembering the units is hard. None of my friends children are doing this in their schools (prep/state).

My Y1 DD is doing problems such as 37+25 ... but she is doing them using partitioning? Is that what you mean. It's only approximately the top third of her class that is doing this - the rest are still working on simpler sums.

I think there is huge variation in year 1. There are children who are still getting to grips with number bonds to 10 and there are also children who are adding two digit numbers and a very few who are doing more than this.

In my DS's primary and the two I've worked in as a TA we would not be doing column addition in Y1. Perhaps partitioning the tens and units and adding them separately, then adding them together, but only on paper, and only the more able. More likely to be using a number line, adding in jumps of 10 and jumps of 1. Mentally, that's the method I'd expect them to be most comfortable with. In my current school the lower ability DC would still be using number lines in Y3 alongside partitioning and would only get on to formal column addition at the end of Y4.

My son was doing column addition with carrying in year 1 but there were others in the class who were focussing on learning the 2x table. There is a huge range at this age.
