friend's dd in detention, but mother not informed

Anyone know about education law? A friend's DD, year 7, was kept after school for detention, but her mother wasn't told and when DD tried to call to tell her mum was told that she couldn't keep her phone in detention.

This caused problems as my friend can't drive and DD needed to pick up younger sister from school. It all worked out in the end, but surely there needs to be some notice by the school informing parents of detention?

I'm sure the child would have been allowed to phone from the office. It's normal not to have phones in detention.

Not any more. We do still give 24 hours notice, for the reasons you describe. But I believe we no longer have to.

My DS's school gives 24 hour notice, written in their planner.

It was No notice needed for up to 20 mins. 24 hours for longer but recently changed I think to no notice for anything (though we stick with the old system to limit issues )

Depends how long they are kept for..I think schools are allowed 15min detention without having to inform parents.

I still give notice, though.
