Book recomendations to help dd blend her words

Hi my dd1 is in Year R. She is my first child so I do feel I am winging most things most of the time. We have worked alot on her letters and their sounds and she is fine with these, she can pick out letters and can associate words with a letter ie C is for cat or R is for russia etc.

She was upset yesterday as her friends have all be given reading books at school and she hasn't. I spoke to her teacher today and it is because although she knows the sounds she is struggling with blending them together to make words.

I dont really know what to do to help her so was going to go to waterstones to see if there are any books that I can get to help her with this. We do read to her 5 nights a week and get her involved with the stories (ie she can read books such as the gruffalo from memory by looking at the pictures but cant pick out the words).

Any advice or suggestions would be really helpful thank you.

On a previous MN recommendation we have joined readingchest.co.uk - £9.99 a month for a number of level appropriate reading books a month I think - DS1 loves these and his reading (esp blending) has come on in leaps and bounds. Check it out Bumps.

Otherwise you can borrow jolly phonics books from the library and practice the blending with her.

I would strongly recommend Mona McNee's "Step by Step" Reading. Worked through this with ds who wasn't making any progress at school, I felt. He is now one of the best readers in the class (Y1 - started Step by Step Reading at around Easter time).

Read Write Inc do little packs of around 6 phonics-based paperbacks. I found these useful as well.

If she is having difficulty blending then surely what she needs is to keep looking at books and practicing?

My DD is in Reception too. Had a book a week from the beginning. At the beginning of December I was still writing 'finding blending very difficult' in her reading record. 7/8 weeks later and she is much better - can read 'the fan is not hot, said Dan' without any trouble.

A school reading book will be a lot easier for her to try to read than the gruffalo, and it will be (hopefully) a good mix of easy to decode words plus some trickier words.

DD totally refuses to try to read her story books, apparently they are for me to read to her only. But she is happy to have a go with any 'learning to read' type books. We have some ORT (horribly dull ) books from The Book People and some Red Nose Readers, also from TBP.
