Spellings for ds Yr2

Hello
Just a little bit about ds, yr1 ds struggled with writing and spelling so he was given extra support for phonics work.
Anyway this year he seems to have made a huge leap and the group that he was having help with phonics he is now not part of it as the teacher spoke to me and said that he actually does nt need to go anymore as he knows them and finds it too easy. She also said that during phonics sessions and spelling out words he is actually one of the best in the whole class. But his spelling are so simple he gets 8 each week and he doesnt even look at them to revise them and gets them right every single week.
I spoke to the teacher and said I am testing him on high frequency words at home myself and he seems to spell them fine.
His reading has come on alot and maths.
He still struggles with writing such as making the sentence a bit more interesting such as using wow word he often just uses simple words.
If he is finding his spelling too easy shouldn't the teacher recognize this and move him to a group where the words are bit more challenging?

They could move him groups or they might be happy for him to re-inforce his knowledge and build his confidence.

Like the idea of your working with him on HF words - well done.

If your keen for him to move "up" a group why not find out what else he should be able to do in order to move up ie do they use the groups for guided reading in which case he might need to be at say Blue level books, do they use the groups for show and tell in which case supporting his verbal presentation confidence, etc
Then you can approach the teacher with a much stronger view ie he can do this this and this and has 100% in spellings for a term - please can he now be moved up (emphasising all the while that its's the teachers excellent teacher that has lead to this leap !)

They are building on his confidence this was on of his issues and guided reading he is in top group and again she said that he is the only one who answes and understands what they re reading out of the group of hildrnw he is with.
You could be right about the term spellings that she could be waiting for a full term of 100% rights and then maybe move him to a higher level. She seems to go by how he writes rather than reading.
Is that right? My nephew same age is on lower band reading my ds is way past him and nephew spellings are quite challenging he is in a diff school. Maybe diff school have diff approach.

Yes schools do have different approaches to teaching spelling, if your comparing a couple of things to watch for are that longer spellings are not always harder for example it is easier to spell "bedroom" (phonetic) than "here". Also it does seem good that the teacher links spelling to writing as children can often spell by learning a list but not get exactly the same words wrong a week later when writing a story.

I noticed you mentioned struggling to use wow words etc. Someone gave me this resource to use with my children and I absolutely love it

www.wanboroughprimary.org/Curriculum/VCOP%20Mat.pdf

Already have it out for my year 1 and what I am now doing with my toddler is making sure I use lots of adjectives in speech which I did both to do with my first two children....

Sorry I meant I didn't do with my first two children so I expect it's going to take a little bit longer for them to start using interesting words in their writing....

howtocalmachild oh I Love that link you just gave. I am now on computer printing it out.
I will use that with both my dc's. Thank you so much.
My ds had a weak start and from what I can see he is making really good progress. I just don't want them to stick him with a group that is not challenging enough for him. He already has moved on to independent work as the rest of his group still need support so doesn't that give the teacher a big hint?

RosemaryandThyme my nephews spelling are quite hard such as vanished, giant, and stuff like that he did do the spellings that my ds is doing in year 1.
Ds does spellings such as 'th' 'ng' 'ch' words. She is going to give me a list of other sounding words he is yet to be tested on. He does spell his words correctly when writing but like I said his sentences are boring. X

If your child was in the poor group last year it will be good for his confidence to find things 'easy' for a while. The teacher is may be checking he is using the words correctly out of the test situation and then may move him on to mote difficult words. Do a google search for hf words (there are 2 stages to these...first 100 and then 200) so you could just teach your child these at home.

Oh I see, sounds like your lad could really cope with being a bit more stretched on the spelling and writing side, the recomendations here for helping at home seem a good place to start - would it be possible for him to collate a little file of work done at home and take this in to show the teacher ? Most teachers really will be supportive in moving a child to a more appropriate group but sometimes they are hampered because they haven't been able to observe the childs progress during the school day.
And well done to your boy -sounds like he is on a fast learning curve!

Yes I have the high frequency words and this what I do test him by.
RosemaryandThyme I do hope he is going to well. But his writing sentences compared to his peers is a bit below average. His peers are like WOW did they really write that at this age. I'm sure I could string a sentence together when I was in year 2 lol or well maybe do a few but nothing that had big words in hahha. Thanks for all ur advices it's really nice to hear other mums and peoples views just so I know I'm not worrying too much x
