writing in reception

I am really pleased with how my dd has settled into reception. She is having a great time painting, making models etc. all of which i am happy about as she loves crafty stuff. My only slight concern is that at home she can spell and write any CVC word competently, and makes good attempts at other words. She enjoys writing little notes for us but i don't think the teacher knows she can do this. Does it matter? When i asked her if she does it at school she said no because she doesn't know what to write.

Sounds like your dd well advanced for her age with writing.
A big 'no worries' from me.
As for the teacher I am sure she will realise in time what a good writer your dd is.
Relax...

Thanks for the reply. I do not really know what is 'normal' for a reception age child or what the others are doing and we haven't had a parents evening yet. I would be really embarssed to go in and point out what dd can do so i think you are right that is is best to wait.

Have the school given you any information about what they're covering this term and when and how they're starting phonics?

I'd sort of be surprised if a reception class hadn't at least started phonics by now. It may be that your dd hadn't made a connection yet between the letters they do at school and those she does at home.

Yes. She is doing s,a,t,p,i,n etc. at school although she was really good at those before school. The good thing is that her letter formation is better from doing them at school (she has to do it her way with me!). As far as i know though she hasn't written any words yet, though she does at home.

Would she like to write a note to the teacher?!
I have noticed -little girls in particular- giving notes / writing to the teacher from reception/ year 1 and year 2 . My ds would rather stick pins in his eyes but the girls seem to like to do it.

That's a good idea. She worked out how to write her teacher's name last week (at home). I don't think she is particularly advanced, just that she is good at hearing the sounds and writing them down. I do think she has a bit of an issue with getting things wrong (a bit of a perfectionist), so that may limit her a bit.
