Spellings

Should my 6yr old be getting spellings, when he cant even read the words?
(He struggles with reading, so is behind his peers)
Surely, he should be getting easier spellings until his reading improves?

Should I speak to teacher or just butt out and leave it to them?

Thanks

He absolutely should not be bringing home spellings that he can't read.

You should ask the teacher for either an easier list, or no list at all.

After 2 years of getting easy lists, finally this year the teacher has agreed not to send home any spellings at all for DD.

But every year I have to discuss this with the teacher. It never seems to be something that occurs to them :(

thanks indigobell. I think this is half the reason why homework is becoming so impossible to get him to do.
Hes not fluent with his sounds yet either. Knows them all but slow processing them and gets muddled. Taking both into consideration, its too much for him.
I was wondering was i missing something! it just doesnt make sense to me.
Going to see teacher on Wednesday when Im off :)

This year I've agreed with the teacher that we'll do the hornet literacy primer instead of spelling lists. You could bring in bear necessities and ask the teacher if you could do that with DS instead of spellings.

Then during the spelling test DD goes out with the TA and reads with her.

Previous years we had easy lists - and they were a total waste of valuable time. (and I mean very easy lists. 'the', 'was' etc)

Indigo - friend was showing me some of the spellings her 10 yr old gets home. I cant even spell half of them. Used to be good at spellings, spellcheck makes us lazy. lol
