homework in year 3?

just found out that my ds's year 3 class are not being set regular homework, just occasional work on projects, based on what they do in class, plus reading (only) three times per week.
When I queried this with his class teacher today, she said that she'd asked the class to bring some food packaging into class tomorrow and that this counted as homework!
Does anyone else think this is strange?
(By the way, I do Maths and English homework with ds approx 5 days a week under my own steam).

My DS, also year 3, is ok with homework, but I do think he has quite a lot - reading 5 times a week, weekly spelling test, maths homework and literacy homework every week.

In your position, my only real concern would be whether they suddenly drop loads on them later? At least we are getting into a routine early on.

Many people believe that homework achieves nothing in primary, so I wouldn't have thought it was that strange tbh. Many schools will set something each week, many won't. Homework at this age should be supporting what they do in class anyway, so it sounds like she is taking a wide approach to that.

@ patricia holm - so why do other schools ask kids to read daily and, especially now in year 3 (starting juniors), start to give more Maths, English, History homework, etc? From our experience last year, I am convinced that my working with ds at home helped him achieve level 3 in maths, for example.

Ours asks for reading daily too, and sets weekly homework. I'm not saying I don't think it can be helpful, just that many others don't, so I can see that a school not setting it wouldn't be that odd, or unusual.

Certainly not having any until secondary would lead to a huge shock in Yr7!

DS is in year 3 and gets weekly spellings and maths/literacy homework every other week. Reading is just generally there rather than being specifically set. There are some ad hoc things as well. Seems all right so far (although some of his spellings are quite hard which is a to both our systems )

Dd in Y3. She gets 3 large books per week to read, 12 spellings every Monday to study for test on Friday, sentences...put spelling words into sentences, Maths..worksheet on topic per week and usually one other piece..varying from book review to design/draw something. This is more than enough for her.
She is exhausted every evening so I would never look for extra homework but I sometimes do extra myself with her. One to one at this stage makes a huge difference in my opinion.

We have a homework task once a week (arrives on Friday, has to be back for Tuesday). Reading every night, a maths task each week, eg: a times table (tested on Fridays), plus 10 spellings. We do get through it, but I hate it. Wish DS was at your school.

Not strange, marvellous. Kids age 7 don't benefit from huge amounts of homework...if any
I'd be thrilled if there was a no homework policy. Not because I wish to undermine DS's chances in life. After school should be about fun, games & exercise. These are valid learning experiences more than equivalent to write half a page on whatever.

As it is DS has 2 books, spellings & a homework sheet per week.
