ds has started in yr 1. Towards the end of reception he was on stage 9 biff and chip stories and would read one per night. Now he has been put back to stage 8 but given an (old) book which has jackdaws on (the spoilt holiday). There is a lot of text on the page and a seperate section with facts and a 'myth'. He is finding it challenging due to the length of the pages although he can read almost all of the words ok. Am i right in thinking that these books are to develop a childs reading stamina? There is no way he'll be able to read these books in one night though.
Does anyone have any experience of this particular series?

I remember ds reading Jackdaws and enjoying them. Yes, he would perhaps read a Jackdaw at a lower level than other ORT books as they seem a different style. He usually read them over 2 - 3 nights if I remember correctly. I think I remember having to help him more with the second section of each book.

Until now, most of the scheme books he will have read will have been fiction. Jackdaws ( IIRC) introduce non fiction on a related topic. So they help to extend children's understanding and provides excellent opportunities for discussion! I really wouldn't try to finish them in one night, settle down and talk about them!
