Can't believe I'm asking this but would value opinions from any teachers. DC had these levels at the end of year 5 -

Writing - 4a
Reading - 4b/a
numeracy - 3b/a.
science - ?

Is the expected progress 1 or 2 sub-levels? Thanks.

We have always been told that either 1 or 2 sub levels is acceptable and to some extent depends on the progress the year before.
Progress isn't linear so if, for example, your DC went from a 4c to a 4a between years 4 and 5 then they might make just one sub level of progress in writing this year. That would average it out at 3 sub levels over 2 years which is the expected pace of progress.
On the otherhand if they had been at the 3c level of numeracy at the end of Year 4 then you might be looking for a minimum of 2 sub levels progress this year to take them up to a 4c

With the SATS in Y6 school will be doing absolutely everything the can to convert those 4s to 5s, and that 3 to a 4.

You're likely to be offered booster classes and all sorts towards the end of year.
