Our family is looking to relocate to West Lothian and would like to know what would be some good schools to look at for next school term. I know that there are many schools in the area and also know that what we would like may not be where the council decides either. I would appreciate any suggestions...GOOD OR BAD! We are open and looking at all areas of West Lothian.

Where are you moving from. Each school will have a catchment area and you would normally apply to the catchment school and if you don't want that then you would apply for an out of catchment place. Quite a few of my friends live in Linlithgow and love it there and are happy with the schools there.

I'd pick an area you like first and then narrow it down

Def best to pick an area first, as it'll also depend on if you need to commute (eg into Edinburgh or Glasgow etc).
Are you moving from within Scotland or England/ Wales? If outwith Scotland, the school year your children go into may be different, as children start slightly later here and dont start secondary until they are 12.

West Lothian in general has pretty good schools. The local authority ensures that each school is regularly checked up on, lots of meetings with the education head honchos with headteachers!

In Scotland parents place a lot less emphasis on getting kids into a "good" school, catchments and such like. I am not really sure why that is tbh.

Sorry to just get back...I've been out of town. Thank you all for the great advice. We will be moving from the U.S. so all of this is new to us and makes me a little nervous. As far as the catchment school...I do not think I will really mind since I will not have a preconceived notion leaning good or bad. We currently are in small town and like it but I am originally from a city's suburb...so size doesn't matter to me. My husband will be working in either Falkirk or Uphall...so anywhere around there is fair game for living and commuting. Thank you all for your input!
