Reports again sorry! What level is this?

DD1's report came home today. It gives me a lovely list of what she can do but no indication of whether this is above/below expectation or what level she is. I would like to know so that I can track her progress next year. Also I have always thought that her literacy is better than her maths. Could any teachers give me an indication of what levels this report would indicate?

"Literacy - dd is an excellent listener and has gained confidence in speaking in front of class. She uses a louder voice in group reading and reads fluently with beautiful expression. She enjoys answering questions and talking about stories. She writes neatly, forming letters correctly, joining her letters and keeping her writing the same size. DD uses capital letters and full stops most of the time and is beginning to use speech marks and exclamation marks in her writing. She can spell most high frequency words correctly and is starting to write stories using her own story lines. She is beginning to use describing words and her stories have a beginning, a middle and an end.

Numeracy - DD is a confident mathematician and can add or subtract numbers to one hundred using a 100 square. She can find missing numbers in a sequence of the 2,5 or 10 times tables to 100. She understands the place value of 2 digit numbers and understands odd and even numbers. She knows the value of coins and can make amounts to £1 and give change to 50p. She can name common 2d and 3d shapes and describe their properties. DD can tell the time using an analogue clock at o'clock, 1/2 past and 1/4 to and past the hour. She has good recall of doubles and halves to ten and can find the difference between two small numbers. She can say the number that is one more or less or ten more or less to one hundred. "

Sorry it is so long! Thanks

What's the point if you don't say how old your daughter is?
I'd guess she's end of Y2.
Go and ask the teacher what her end of year national curriculum level is for each core subject.

Which year group? I've written similar things about my Year 2s at about a 2Bish for the literacy and 2A or 3C for maths, but it's all relative Confused. If your child was Y2 you would have End of Key Stage 1 levels. If it's Year 1 could be slightly lower levels -"is beginning to..." implies that it is not consistent, so the may not tick of that strand on APP to finalise the levels.

Sorry - she's Yr1 - although surely the level is the level regardless of her age?

On the other hand, if she's in Y6, she's struggling.
Why are there so many threads where parents haven't got a clue about what the levels mean, or where their children are, or whether a 2a is higher or lower than a 2c?
Not just you OP< it seems as if every third thread is a report-linked request for more information.

Do you think her maths is stronger than her literacy then AbigailS?

So now you have your answer, she's an able Y1 who is managing many of the Y2 expectations.

Ask her teacher, she's built up her knowledge of your daughter over an entire year and can balance the skills against her reasoning and understanding. You can't level writing without reading a selection, and can't asses her maths without a clear understanding of how she explains her methods and can use her skills in other situations and problem solving.

Goblinchild - I understand the levels (I think), I just don't know what level she would be as her report doesn't tell me. I think if the schools were more forthcoming with the information which parents want, then there would be less discussion about it. I don't want to leave it and be told she's a 2b at the end of next year and not know whether that it good progress from this point.

I'd say she is an able Y1 child. No idea on the levels she'd be at though - we also don't put them on the Y1 reports either btw. But she is doing things that the children nearer the top of my class (I am a TA) are doing.

You are entitled to ask now what level she is at, and to see any evidence they have to support it. So if she's running at a 2b/2a now, she should be around a 3c or 3b at the end of Y2. That will be based on a year of teacher assessments, not just the SATS.

guessed at year one..

agree, it doesn't give you any indication of where she is if you have no idea what she is supposed to be doing. do you have an opportunity to talk to the teacher?

It's hard to judge the reading level without more information, but for writing I was using "She ... is starting to write stories using her own story lines. She is beginning to use describing words and her stories have a beginning, a middle and an end." to make my suggestion. The words "starting" and "beginning" suggest she is at an early stage of these objectives and maybe not achieving them consistently and independently enough to be at a higher level. The maths report is more "She can..." rather than "beginning to ..." and the objectives are in level 2.
I agree with asking the teacher for your DD's levels. That may help clear things up. But from what I read she is working at above age expectations. A lovely positive report and you should be proud, but I would have liked some targets or next learning steps in the report

Thanks everyone - I'm happy that she seems to be doing well. Maybe I'll try to find out more from the teacher in the morning although I don't want her to feel like I'm challenging her in any way as dd has been very happy with her and clearly progressed well. I'd just like to know really as a starting point for next year.

x posted AbigailS - thanks - that makes sense. I would guess that her writing is lower than her reading, which I should think is fairly normal for most children? She has finished the reading scheme at school but it finished at level 8. You are right - some future targets would have been helpful.

I would say that she is above average for a Year 1 child; in both maths and literacy.

It sounds very similar to DD's (end Yr1 as well) and she got a 2B for both literacy and maths,e.g above average for Y1 for both. Sounds like your school have a policy of not giving actual scores at this point, but the teacher should be able to give you an idea if you would like to track to the end of next year where you should definitely be given scores.
