Reception Class

My child will be starting Reception Class in September.

A little while ago there was a thread on here that had wonderful advice to help you get your child ready for their new school. It had things like put a keyring on their school bag so that they can tell their bag from others.

All these different tips were excellent.

I've tried to find this thread, but have had no luck.

Can anyone help?

Don't know where the thread is ... However, my tips would be:

  • practise dressing and undressing with school uniform, including putting coat on and changing in PE clothes. Teacher may need to help 25-30 kids changing so it is a great help if a child can change himself and it boosts the child's self esteem no end.
  • make child familiar with name labels in clothes, book bag, PE bag, lunch bag, water bottle so it knows which is his/hers
  • lots of practise using the toilet by himself, wiping properly, washing hands properly
  • practise opening lunch box, eating from lunch box, opening drinks pack/bottle etc
  • make sure all his/her stuff is clearly labelled and personalise book bag, lunch bag, PE bag, spare clothes bag, water bottle with character key rings and/or personalised labels and/or iron on or sticky letters in colours (there are lots of companies who do this, you can even have iron on/transfer name labels for socks!) - you can look for these things together and let him/her choose
  • school may have an open day soon, so might be nice to go together to look round if possible
  • there are probably some books about going to school to read together
  • more generally being very positive about him/her going to school, such a big boy/girl etc.

Good luck
