If I like a school 2.8 miles away is it too far?

Anyone got in to one further away?

Can they make you go to your closest school?

They can't make you go to any school. By law your child must be educated not necessarily in school. You can apply for any school but that doesn't mean you will get a place if they are over subscribed

A mile away as the crow flies - mile and a half by road.

There are DC who live 6 miles away from school (PAN - 20) so yes it is possible.

Admission varies from LA to LA - here you put down three choices and they try to give you one of them, rural schools have a catchment, others give priority to siblings.

Like mrz said they can't make you go there, but they could give you a place there that you are free to decline and make alternative arrangements (private / home ed etc)

Dd's school is 2.5 miles away. There are plenty of spaces here so you generally get the school you want. There are probably six or more schools closer to home tbh.

it depends where you live, dd's school is 0.35 miles away, if we had lived a few houses along she wouldn't have got in. Most schools allocate places on distance from home in some areas you can live miles away, in some you have to live next door to get in.

Our catchment primary school is 2.2 miles away by road or 1.6 as the crow flies, we are just on the edge of catchment.
Our Secondary school is 2.4 miles away.

we moved to a bigger place but opted to keep the children in the schools, they was 14 mile away Shock it was too much for everyone so we moved back, I have to do 4 schools and not one of them is further than 1 1/2 mile away.

DS's school is 2 miles away. It's not our catchment school though which is nearly the same distance in other direction. Means no free school bus (rural).

We live 1.4 km (0.9 miles) from DD's school and 3.5 km (2 miles) from the DSSs' school. Which is quite far enough for us!

5 miles away.
There are several good primaries which are closer but our preferred secondary has an admissions policy which accepts children from a group of partnership schools, dd's school being one of them.

So we accepted the difficulties of travelling further to Primary with the pay off of a guaranteed place at a top ranking secondary.

Is 2.8 miles as crow flies or by road?

DS1's school is 2.6m away by road and takes about 8-10 minutes by car. But, by crow flies its 1.4m as there are lots of fields etc so he got in no problem.

3.5 miles not closest school, we tried closest school, didn't like it and moved DD to RC one.
