it depends where you live, dd's school is 0.35 miles away, if we had lived a few houses along she wouldn't have got in. Most schools allocate places on distance from home in some areas you can live miles away, in some you have to live next door to get in.
we moved to a bigger place but opted to keep the children in the schools, they was 14 mile away it was too much for everyone so we moved back, I have to do 4 schools and not one of them is further than 1 1/2 mile away.
5 miles away. There are several good primaries which are closer but our preferred secondary has an admissions policy which accepts children from a group of partnership schools, dd's school being one of them.
So we accepted the difficulties of travelling further to Primary with the pay off of a guaranteed place at a top ranking secondary.
