Any teachers managed to coax a story out of their kids..with no support from an adult? If not , what is your approach so you have something of substance worth assessing. Or do you assess and level the kids using their general week by week output. This would seem to reflect a more realistic reflection of abilty.
thanks for feedback.

I do a week on unaided writing

We have a speaking and listening day to get the children used to the vocab .. e.g. a story about feeding the ducks we role play feeding the ducks

Then we have a day planning the story in partners

Then unaided they write it

I think if they are accustomed to writing without adult support in their general work it is better to assess this but not if an adult has prompted.
I encourage independent writing in reception so that it isn't an issue

Thanks for that cazzybabs. We have been doing lots of work based on the lighthouse keepers lunch so could have them joining Mr grinling for the day. They've aquired a good vocab base and know the characters and setting well.

How do you deal with those awkward ones who can't concentrate long enough to produce a piece long enough to assess? Return to it the next day?

Do they have a theme? Our writing assessments are based on a topic or story we are covering? It is sometimes retelling the story or sometimes changing key aspects of the story. They never do it all on their own without ideas given?

Do you do story maps or mountains first?

Will plan it with them first using mountain structure.

Bronte - I assess what they have done. TBH I sit with those boys who I know will find it hard to stay focused but don't aid the writing just keep them on task .. but you can get a feel for where they are anyway so if the special piece of work is above/below where I actuall;y think they are I just flag it with my boss

Thanks for your feedback. Looking forward to see how they cope next week. Have the seeds of a good writing prompt based on our story book so hope they will enjoy it.
