Hi just wondered what the approx levels for a child in year 2 should be on the ort reading scheme?

varies enormously, so try not to panic. have a look here
My ds2 is in y2 and has finished the ORT scheme and is on to free readers, but my dyslexic ds1 is still on the scheme books in y5.

Many thanks for that, ds is only on level 4 and he is almost seven, to be honest he seems to find them a bit too easy, but school are reluctant to move him up a stage.

have they said why he's on this level?
My dd in reception is already on level 3...

As far as reading schemes go, different schools use them in different ways - there are loads of books on each level (and I hate ORT tbh!) If concerned, may be worth a chat with his teacher?

The Y2 children I read with vary from stage 5 to stage 12. I don't read with the whole class but am pretty certain that there are a couple still on stage 4.

He has ASD and dyspraxia, but his reading was always one of his strong points ie in reception he was the first in hhis class to get reading homework, but he isn't making as much progress as I thought he would at school. He reads a lot at home so i suppose I shouldn't be too worried as he must just be progressing at his own level and at least he still gets pleasure from it.

If there's a big discrepancy between the reading at home and the ORT stage, then it might be worth chatting to the teacher.
She may be keeping him on the stage if she is looking for indications that he is really understanding the story (being able to predict what will happen next, invent alternate endings, read emotions and reactions from the pictures etc.) as well as being able to simply read the words.

yoshysmum a biggie regarding reading when they get to yr2 is being able to read a book and then summarise it, which is quite a skill as the child needs to pick out the main points of the story from all the text. Apparently this is my DD's personal and guided reading group target at the mo. Just a little tip.

mrz a quick question if you are around? Regarding my DDs target mentioned above, would I be right in thinking that this is quite a high level skill? She is reading brown level books at school, equivalent to about ORT level 12 I think, and does an extra reading group once a week with the most able from both classes. She was pushing a level 3 for reading at the end of yr1 and I guess reading between the lines that the teacher is trying to secure them a solid level 3? Does that sound about right? Teacher is very lovely but guarded about giving out much info! Thanks.

Yes for a secure level 3 I would be looking for her to be able to retrieve information from the text, use inference to understand what the author hasn't actually written but implies and to be able to discuss techniques used in the text (writing in capitals to emphasis a point for example).
