Night time knee pain

Was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on my sons mysterious knee pain.
He is 12 and has been walking up in the night with knee pain only in his right knee. It's bad enough to wake him up several times a night for last week.

He was sent to hospital by doctors and had x ray and blood tests with everything coming out normal, no signs of inflammation or anything.

Growing pains was my thought but it's only in 1 knee and has been EVERY night for last week.

I don't think it's an attention thing as he doesn't even wake me up and says it helps if he walks it out. No pain at all during day.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

I think it would be worth seeing a physio or an osteopath as they have different expertise and might spot something - Osteopath if you think growing pains, physio of more likely a sports strain.

Thanks for replies, we had our first night of full sleep last night so fingers crossed the problem may be gone :)

if it keeps happening look up osgood schlatter and crmo if those possibly match symptoms.
crmo doesn't always show in blood tests and the bone lesions can be easy to miss on an x-ray.

if he is in pain that's bad enough to wake him up you can give paracetamol or ibuprofen.

good that you have taken him to the dr and that they have started to look into it. too often pain in children is just dismissed.

I just came on to say Osgood Schlatter too which my daughter developed at a similar age.

@TinaTurnoff thanks for reply. Can I ask did your daughter have pain with it in the day. I just find it strange he only gets the pain at night and can happily play football ect during day then be woken up by the pain at night.

@redcandlelight thanks for your reply. Have googled both of those. Will have to see if it keeps happening. He has played a lot of sports over the last few years so maybe linked.

at that age children do silly things, like jumping down from great heights looking at dc or simply falling on school playground and keeping going due to peer pressure.
greenstick fractures are also quite common and are not always immediately visible on an x-ray.

Osgood sclatters. My sons just gone through it. 6 months. Very very painful. Rest when painful , exercises no running or jumping and it will go x
