My 11 yo son has been complaining about his bones hurting especially his bottom legs last night. It sounds like growing pains which I read on the nhs website and I always give him calpol which helps but it isn't going away. My auntie who is a nurse says the same that its growing pains but he started to look in pain aswell although Im not sure because he has pretended to be im pain to get a day off school before ha. Is is worth going to doctors?

I used to get growing pains a lot at that age. They were painful, but my mum never kept me off school for them and in the end it's best to keep yourself busy so as not to think about them and they soon pass.

Sorry, I should say I wouldn't bother going to to doctor about it unless it gets really bad and carries on for a good few days. You can't do anything about growing pains

It definitely sounds like growing pains. My little gal has had them for at least three years. They come and go and are excruciating when they hit - she really screams sometimes. Often there will be a long gap between attacks. She went for about 10 months recently and then they returned about 3 weeks ago. Calpol or ibuprofen are the only things that seem to help and that's all the GP could recommend as well. My youngest nephew also had them for years (into his teenage years).

This is absolutely growing pains. I had them majorly. I'm 6' tall. My husband, son and daughter all had them. Husband and son are 6'4, my daughter is 6'. We all had them very frequently through our teens. Don't worry. I remember being so sore I wanted to cry.

If it doesn't resolve fairly quickly, or if it is accompanied by :

  • feeling tired and breathless, repeated infections over a short space of time, bruising easily, unusual and frequent bleeding, such as bleeding gums or nosebleeds, fever, night sweats or weight loss

then it would be worth consulting a GP
