Do pre-schools need internet now?

I am secretary of a pre-school and our EYP leader has told us that, according to a missive from Ofsted, (on something called SEF) emphasis is now being put on information technology, so we really need an internet connection!

Does any-body know about this? It just seems ridiculous to me and yet more expense. We already have a lap-top with appropriate programs and a programmable be-bot. Does any-body know how I can find out about this for myself?

I'm the website administrator for a local preschool and I've had a look at the EYFS pages on the Direct Gov website and have found nothing about specifically accessing or using the Internet on there. Look here

That said, it may be the case that an introduction to the Internet is desirable because it is something DS1 did almost immediately in ICT lessons during reception year.

Have a read of that link and see what you think.

I am a newly appointed Chair but we have been looking in to internet. My understanding from our supervisor is that it is more for her use whilst at pre-school because of the new child records, which will be computer based and which she is not supposed to have at home. It is also so West Sussex County Council can use the system to distribute alerts, info etc. I don't know the specific ins and outs and it one of those things on my list of things to look in to a bit more.

Thank you both, I cannot find anything that specifies the necessity to have the internet, although from what bringontherose says I can see the benefits for the EYP leader. I will ask her at our meeting on Thursday and report back, as it may be of use to you, it sounds like something new as usual!

Thank you Columbian for your efforts. I have just rung BT who said that unfortunately they don't offer this service, but worth a try!

I will post back on here if I do find any-where that does this, for every-body's information.
