Explanation of rain for 3yo

When DS asks why it's raining, I tell him it's because the clouds are too full. I seem to remember from science at school that there was a lot of "You know we told you this? Well, it's not strictly true..." but is my explanation in the right ballpark? (Google seemed to say yes, but I'm not entirely convinced.) Is there a better explanation?

I was told it was God emptying the bath.... hmm

Thats what I tell my five year old and shes quite happy with it. Although we do discuss it as being part of the water cycle.

Yeah, I think I say that the water in the clouds has got too heavy and fallen out. Which is more or less right.

Sounds better than my remembered " cos the clouds are unhappy" - usually followed by "BECAUSE YOU DID X,Y,Z"

I tell ds that the clouds have too much water to carry and that it's too heavy so they drop some of it. Pretty true?

Water cycle Don't know if that helps but you could print that off to colour in.

Good explaination
