For example I talk to grown women who say they hated compulsory sport at school (and many boys are not keen)

Why should teacher and PT fanatic know better than the child or parent in this?

Another thing you do get injuries in compulsory sport (occasionallty even deaths in compulsory school runs) We arent all built for sportd fanaticism But I like footie and cricket.

At pre-school age? Isn't it all about being active and working on general co-ordination and basic ball skills at this age?

Physical activity is important and should be encouraged.

Did you mean to post this in pre-school?

I like many hated sport in secondary school. I also hated needlework, reading out in class, art, music(we had to sing solo!), but I had to do them.
My own dyslexic sons always struggled in english and spelling tests in primary were humiliating for them. That does not mean I should have the right to withdraw them.

i hated PE/games all the way through school, and i think some schools seem to rather over emphasise sports, but as the other posters have said, it makes no sense to allow kids to opt out of PE unless you also allow them to opt out of music, cooking, needlework, woodwork etc...

I think that PE teachers need to get more creative about sport in school - the message I got from school is that the only sport worth doing is competitive sport and if you aren't good at it then don't bother. Nothing about enjoying sport for keeping healthy or just for enjoyment...
I would love my dds to get a different message to mine.

You won't find specialist sports teachers in pre-schools though. Nor organised team sports or anything competitive (bar the odd egg and spoon race).

It's really important for children this young to have lots of physical activity to develop motor skills.

At school children have complusory Maths, Englsih, Science, and a whole host of otherr subjects.

what the difference?

If you are posting in the pre school section then the early years foundation stage allows chidren a choice anyway. I don't understand your problem.
