Which water filtering systems do you think are good? Looking for recommendations, TIA

Sorry just seen this. I have a water purifying straw just from amazon, and some purifying tablets. Can't help on brands, sorry. Have you read on here about straining water through an old tee shirt and then boiling hard for a minute?

Are you looking for an emergency solution like a life straw, or something you can use to run your kitchen long term?

There are v cheap water purification tablets on Amazon. I can’t remember the brand, there are several, but it’s a couple of pounds for a few dozen.

I was going to strain through some cloth, boil and probably then use a tablet once it has cooled just to make sure! Apparently you need to then leave it for a while to let the chemicals disperse, so it’ll need a bit of remembering to do.

But I’m hoping that’ll be a very unlikely situation that won’t happen for very long if it does.

I’d like to assume that they’re aware of quite how vital water is, so will prioritise water treatment chemicals and so on.

Sawyer mini are ok, there's Berkey water filters as well. Water should be high up on the list of preparedness as we can't live very long without it.

I have a stash of purification tablets in case of tap water becoming undrinkable. They are cheap and take up hardly any space.

@Imsayingnothing we have a few bottles in case water is turned off for leaks, maintenance etc, but it takes up too much space to store much. In case of losing water for a long time we are probably just screwed.

@DennisTMenace if you have a chance at least think about getting a Sawyer mini filter.

I've just bought a lifesaver bottle too. Drinking dirty water is one of the biggest causes of disease and death in the world.

If anyone is interested you can look up the modern survivalist there's plenty of info on how to clean water for drinking and using to cook etc. Very useful site.

Why do we need to have a way of purifying water?!

Thanks for the answers, I have some tablets and a few bottles of water. I was just thinking it might be good to have a filtration system too.
I will check out the modern survivalist, thanks, and the Sawyer/Berkeley filters.

@jaffacakefan because drinking dirty water is the next worst thing to having no water to drink.

Because water can get contaminated, even in the UK.

I have a Berkeley filter which we use as our regular day to day filter.

But I was assuming if the tap water isn't drinkable as in unsafe due to lack of chemicals then it will be turned off. So we are talking about purifying rainwater?

I have 3-4 days worth of bottled water for drinking.

Rainwater or spring water. Luckily we're not usually short of rain water in the winter.

Meant to be quoting lexloofah but fluffed it.
But yes, water can get contaminated here too.

If its spring water you can have it tested to see if its potable.

Thnx @ReturntoSpamfritters, I need to see what we have to collect rainwater in then. I have one of those big plastic storage tubs, maybe that will do with some horticultural fleece over the top to keep anything else out. Then water tabs then Berkey. Then probably boil for tea anyway!

We used to live in a place where there was a hurricane season. Before a 'storm' came everyone filled up kettles, pans, baths, buckets as the water got turned off as a precaution but at least we knew when it was going off. We had a water cooler with lots and lots of 5gal bottles stored, I was less worried then than maybe I am now.

If you use plastic for catching or storing water, check its food grade plastic unless you want to use it for flushing the toilet.
