Just to get people started, freak out your family by asking for these:
Fire starter, life straw, sprouting jar and seeds (inspired by another thread) ... any more?

My friend is going to USA/Canada in November so I'm just researching if it's possible to bring me back an All-American pressure canner 😘 hoping to avoid big p&p costs 😁
It'll be my Xmas pressie from DH-he doesn't know yet though 😂

Lots of bits and pieces, mainly things I've seen recommended here. It's our anniversary very soon, and I've told DH I want a camping stove, instead of the usual chocolate and/or bath stuff.

Re. Christmas, I'm definitely going to use our larger pre-Christmas online shops as an opportunity to buy in some bulk items that I tricky to carry home from our usual shops.

If Santa could bring me something more expensive, I'd ask for a large (but preferably pretty) water butt! And send some elves to help clear the garden!

The all-American is awesome. Look into weight and whether the one you chose will exceed baggage allowance and incur charges.
I bought mine from the manufacturer via eBay. Saved up. So worth it. I wish they sold them here.

Also recommend the book Powerless by Suzanne Goldring. The situation is a year without power in the UK. An enjoyable yarn with good tips.

Yea, it's the weight thing I've been wondering about and trying to check. I looked on eBay and Amazon, I think the charges on some on eBay were lower and I may just do it that way but it is SO annoying we can't get them here. Maybe we should look into being importers of them. Lol.

I'm after a washboard and a "breather" (a plunger type thing on a broom handle) for doing laundry off grid.

There's a company in America that still makes washboards, by hand, using the same equipment they did 100 years ago... and their CEO is a Brit Grin

Also after a rocket stove. (I got a Kelly Kettle for my birthday!)

Knitting books (I can knit but I’d like some useful patterns that extend beyond baby blankets and scarves)

More home brew stuff (I have been quite successful with making decent home brew in the past, so I’d like to get a bit more serious about that)

I’m asking for my favourite make up etc. The skincare and make up I use is French and I worry about prices going sky high after Brexit.

DH and I are getting each other sleeping bags for Christmas and also as main presents for the kids. I'm also asking for a Kelly Kettle (have brought this up in conversation with various family members) and some torches. I think a head torch might be very useful.

I would love a generator but I doubt it will happen.

Ive just bought a new slow cooker and I'm after a breadmaker.

I also have a crazy prepper amazon basket atm. Its full of seeds for next year, solar charger, more air absorbers for food storage etc

An extended power cut or water shortage wouldn’t necessarily only happen in the worst case scenario. Given that parts of the SE have been regularly having water issues this summer, being able to clean a few clothes without being able to use a plumbed in washing machine sounds like a good idea to me.

People seriously need to stay off the board if it winds them up so much. Just go back to your lovely world of complacency and unicorns if you don't want to join in the fun world of being prepared to deal with the unexpected.

We like talking about having food in the cupboards, veg and chickens in the garden and blankets at the ready in case of bad weather. If you don't then I suggest you don't click onto the threads.

Back to the topic at hand, i’d love a Kelly Kettle! What sizes have people gone for? Smaller would be easier to heat, but bigger is presumably better if filling lots of hot water bottles etc.

@Dyrne and @Plimmy - pop over to the Litter Tray and announce your view that all cats are shit.
This is in a topic for people interested in prepping. MN set it up ages ago.
If you aren't interested, go on your merry way.
It's not a secret society. Go on to AMA because I did a thread there called I'm a prepper. Ask me Anything. If you aren't interested, you know what to do.

No worries @bellinisurge - it looks like the board has had a few twats recently so it’s hard to tell friend from foe! Grin

I do agree cats are bastards though.

I should know, i’ve got two

Dyrne I'm asking for a large size Kelly Kettle, the 1.6 L one I think it is. It just seems more practical to me. Also I think it will be great for camping.

Dyrne · 08/08/2018 22:08

That’s the way i’m leaning too, @AnotherShirtRuined - and I think it’d be fun to play with out camping too! It’s easier to sneak prep stuff past DP as well when it can be used out camping Grin

These threads simultaneously scare me and make me laugh

There are actually people preparing to do the laundry in the aftermath of catastrophe and the end of civilisation? Priceless

And yet you're on the prepper board? Why is that then? Hmm

Well, I think my secret prepper type wish list on Amazon will gradually come true.

Off topic. I met with with two of my dearest and geographically closest friends today. I very carefully broached the subject of preparadness with them. They both somewhat mocked me about it (not in a particularly mean way - just in a what-are-you-like-nothing-bad-will-ever-happen-are-you-thinking-about-zombies way). I felt a bit dejected, especially since one of them would be incredibly vulnarable to any delays and price rices. But I do feel like I've done my bit to try to bring it to their attention.

I broached the issues with DH tonight (am I being insane?), and he is completely on board with me. I think a camping stove will definitely be in the works!

I would still feed my best friends, were they to turn up on my door steps starving, in a freak emergency. It would have been nicer not to be mocked, though. (Trust me, I only very carefully broached the issue of "best me prepared for stuff", rather than paint any over-the-top scenarios...)

Because they make me laugh. What’s wrong with a justified laugh? Some other MN boards are risible too, like G&T and baby names.

Apart from all that, though, what do you expect? These threads appear in Active Threads. Everyone can see the crazy titles.

And even if Preppers didn’t appear there, why shouldn’t people come here to giggle at this stuff? If people post to MN - and the whole world - they can hardly expect privacy. These are not private conversations.

The more bumps we get the more chance that others will see the threads and so the more chance that other people will see the sense in having some supplies in. Which is better for everyone.

It does get tiresome having to address the same comments on every single thread though.
