How are you prepping for Brexit?

I know we don't know what will happen in the run up to Brexit or afterwards but in my book things are looking scary.
I have legitimate concerns about some of my contracts (one very large one has already pulled out and left me around £1700 pcm down) and I am scared witless about DP's job.

We are currently trying to cut loose any extra expenditure in our household and decided this morning to sell a couple of tech bits we no longer need for my business, in order to free up some cash. Ideally we would love to be saving a bit more but we have some urgent repair work needed on our home which we can't skip until the financial situation looks a bit more calm.
We are overpaying our mortgage by a small amount each month but are now trying to decide if it might be better to stop that and keep the money to one side incase everything goes tits up.

We have a vintage Airstream which is worth a decent amount of money and we use 2x a month min throughout the year (plus almost the entire summer). The value of it continued to rise during the credit crunch and keeps going up. We are trying to decide if it is worth hanging onto in the long term as an investment (and our only source of holidays) or to sell up.

We always have a decent stockpile of freezer, tinned and home preserved food but now I'm wondering if buying in some large bags of rice and pasta for long term could be useful. We have a tiny kitchen so storage is an issue, although not impossible. Does anyone know of any reliable, waterproof, food grade storage containers for keeping non jarred and tinned food in cellar type environments? Our cellar is a little on the damp side, so we tend to be very careful about what we keep down there, although airtight containers fair well.

I know some people will say this is an over reaction but our family is already feeling the direct impact of the leave vote and we are genuinely worried about the continued impact.

It is such a scary prospect ilikebats where are you thinking of moving too? I'm Irish but have lived in the UK for the majority of my adult life. I have an Irish passport and my children and husband (he has an Irish parent) are entitled to Irish citizenship but we don't know if moving back will work for us as we have a very British centric business which wouldn't translate to another country.

I am trying to remain positive (voted remain but need to get on with it now!) however DH's work has already been affected and he has had a significant reduction in pay. My work is also affected.

OP if you have an airstream I'm not sure you have much to worry about. Those things cost many tens of thousands of pounds. If you keep it though you could easily use it for food storage. Plenty of food grade barrels and other containers on eBay. Other option is to buy a cheap vacuum seal machine. They're very easy to use.

We always have a stockpile here, we have been snowed in or faced serious illnesses before and found having food stores and ready of great use and also hugely comforting. It mostly tends to be tinned meals etc with only a small amount of rice and pasta kept (about a weeks worth) at a time. Buying in large volumes of rice is something I've wanted to do for a while and yes I will admit I am panicked (I've lost a lot of money thanks to my contract not being renewed), so this makes me want to stock up.

atticus Yes they are worth a great deal of money. We inherited it and worked hard to fix it up but have put very little money into it ourselves. This is why I wonder if we should hang onto it or not.

Would it make sense to sell the airstream and use the money to reduce your mortgage? I think stopping the monthly overpayments and saving the money instead makes sense for the short term, if your income is going to reduce a lot. It also sounds like looking for different employment might be necessary.

daisy I did wonder that myself, it would take a hefty chunk off our mortgage but equally the value of the airstream has doubled again in the past 5 years, I wonder if it will keep going up, it's our only real investment.

I figure the risk of economic collapse is always there tbh! Not much I can do if that happens.

Yes I suppose financially and having a few back ups around the house incase of job loss.
I generally prep for the things you mention and we are frugal in places but there is something about Brexit which has triggered me to take a long look at what the hell would happen if our finances were damaged further than they have been since July.
I run a couple of small businesses, one of which is in a tourist destination and foreign visitors factor as 38% of our business. I'm thinking about closing/scaling back vastly or laying off staff. It's worrying.

lorelai my friend lives in a small flat and got rid of her coffee table to make prep space. She basically has boxes covered in a white table cloth, stacked with coffee table books and candles. It looks really stylish and you wouldn't know the boxes are there. They contain her candles, torches etc. I thought it a very clever idea.

The stock market is very high too so now isn't the time to invest in that.

I don't think the airstream will continue too rise in value as much as it has. It's risen in value because they been featured in programmes such as grey's anatomy and so have been "trendy" but there's a limit to what people will pay for a caravan.

I'd sell it and pay down your mortgage debt.

I head from someome at work that food prices have already been affected by Brexit (imported food is more expensive). Does anybody know what is likely to go up in price or be difficult to obtain in future if the UK leaves the common market? Not only the cliché of French wine, but things like olive oil and fresh vegetables maybe?

I'll admit that I am completely ignorant and have no idea what foods the UK HAS TO import (ie cannot be produced here).

We will be able to trade with the rest of the world free of quotas and English will remain the principle commercial global language. As freedom of European movement contracts for the unskilled immigration Quotas for skilled workers from other parts of the world may relax.

I have had a promotion and pay rise since brexit, my DH is a niche specialist and expects an exponential increase in his business due to Brexit.

Long term I think this is brilliant for the UK. As Napoleon said the British are a nation of shopkeepers. They need to think outside the box and respond flexibly to the challenges of being free from market restrictions.
