anyone seen any of the prepping (american) tv progs that went through a phase a while ago of being shown? they made me feel so inadequate. on the other hand, they made for GREAT viewing, if not a little depressing. One particular family had about 4 of those huge metal container things that they lived in, all positioned in the shape of a large square with STACKS of food and a shooting range in the middle (like a garden but raised up) aimed at anyone who came into sight......... these type of people lived it and were in their own little world, they actually seem to long for the end of days scenario although ridiculous really as it could (lord forbid) come in many forms, alot of which their fortress wouldn't protect them at all ie tsunami, airbourne virus, super volcano/solar flare eruption etc Grin

Nope, but that sounds hilarious. I like stuff like Alaska Last Frontier - it's more about becoming self sufficient and self responsible for me. I don't like relying on anyone, I prefer to take care of myself, being self sufficient is simply an extension of that, and much better for the environment.

I watched a few. They had gas masks and a huge room full of equipment no average family could ever use. Another one had a family who built a castle.

Oh gosh, I remember that vaguely - wasn't it in the middle of nowhere in Georgia? Up on a hill, lots of red dirt, and huge indefensible windows?

The programme I watched had the large family split in two. One half stayed in the castle, the other had to storm it. It was up a steep hill, I didn't note the soil type.

Oh god I love those programmes, there was a load of them on a while back and other favourites of mine, extreme couponers and another one called extreme tight wads or similar, there was a woman who used to vacuum in the dead of night because electricity was cheaper then, in the dark as well. That sort of telly is a real guilty pleasure for me, they're fucking bonkers the lot of them Grin

I watched the extreme tightfisted one once. A woman went around knocking on neighbours doors asking for foods they no longer wanted. She was well dressed, made up, nice hair, little wicker basket in hand. She was donated cookie fought, put it on a tray and baked them in her car! Grin Her neighbours were interviewed and were Confused at her.

Hah, the one with the guy who used to haunt all the local restaurants, never bought a thing, just frisked all their seating for loose change.

The woman who lifted various items from family all year then wrapped them up and gave them back to them for Christmas 'presents' (sorry OP I might have completely derailed your thread) Blush

The 'date night' when they competed to make it as cheap as possible. Roadkill anyone?

Oh my word. Talk about living off grid - compost toilet, pumped shower, solar panels, gas canisters, growing own food and living in a truck!

Not sure about recycling my poo Grin but it is really interesting.

They grow 35 varieties of organic fruit and vegetables! Wow. What grafters.

I'm watching it too, just got to them discussing the criticism they got, whilst making salads. Fascinating programme, really enjoying it.

They are a completely amazing couple. What an achievement. They pretty much do everything themselves - growing, baking, animals, building....

They're leading a wonderful life. If more people lived like them, it would be so much better.

It's how we want to live. Minus the horse box.
