Just seen this new bit & thought I'd get it started & say hello.
DS2 was born at 28wks & we went through all the normal ups & downs in SCBU.
Ds2 is 5 now & although does have some life long disabilities as a result of his prem birth he is an amazing, happy healthy little boy.

My DS1 is nearly 3, a 29 weeker - pneumothorax and all the normal stuff, now has mild / moderate spastic diplegia CP. Great spirit though and v handsome! No reason for premature birth, DS 2 went to term with no issues.

Oooo, I shall add my name to the list

DTDs 27weekers.

Usual up and downs but we think we got off quite mildly compared to some of the other families on the NNU.

They will be 7 in May

I got a 7 yr old boy who was a 25 weeker. Doing well considering. Slight hearing problem but not enough for a hearing aid. had a grade 1 (which is mild) brain bleed and also had a heart op. Weighed just over a pound at birth and was just over 5 pounds when he came home (after 4 months and a week). During the time he was in intensive care i had to go back to work when he was 27 days old. (was a single parent and had NO money - but i wasnt able to pick my son up at that time so there was nothing i could do - and thats another thread altoghether!)
Was told that he might not do normal stuff. but he walked at 20 months (though i think it was sheer laziness!) and was always small til he was about 18 months. Suffered Chronic lung disease so had lots of puffers and a nebulizer at home. Went home from hosp on 10 types of medication. Sterlised his stuff til 18 months.

BUT now. hes one of the brightest boys in his class, has a reading age of 10 and was the easiest child. Hes tall now (up to my chin but im only 5 ft tall) and tells me every day he loves me! Yep he got off really lightly too and im grateful for that.

Ive rabbited on for ages now. Just to share my story!!

well done mymatemax - was waiting for someone to bite the bullet! My dd2 suffered from IUGR (interuterine growth restriction) and was delivered at 35 weeks weighing 3lb. She was a little fighter, and although still on the small side, is bright and bubbly and fab!

I think that children are so resilient and whether they have any after effects of their prematurity or any problems, it just shows how strong they are and its a testament to them that they came through all this and blessed our lives so richly! they are all wonderful!

My little boy was born at 34 weeks due to severe pre-eclampsia at a very respectable 5lb4. Looked like a giant in NICU. Had a lot of trouble breathing, on a ventilator for 4 days because of RDS and then severe reflux/pneumonia kept him on low flow oxygen for 4 weeks. Finally came home after 7 weeks in SCBU. He's now 17 months old, a bit behind his peers but otherwise fine and utterly gorgeous . Lovely to hear from other mums who've been through the SCBU rollercoaster!

Hello to you all, see there are quite a few of us on here
Like you hairy ther was no reason for ds2's prem birth (ds1 was 10 days late & huge) he just stopped moving & was in distress.
He had pneumothorax too, he has mild spastic diplegia, learning difficulties, ASD/OCD & severe asthma. But is amazing, coping so well in ms primary & as we speak I can hear him bouncing about on his bed!
So i'm off to give him a stern talking to.

It's strange how many of us have a prem following a really straightforward first birth. I don't know whether that makes it harder or not? I certainly found it really hard to come to terms with things going pear shaped after having no problems the first time. My dc3 was also very straightforward, so I guess dc2 was just one of those things.

My 5 year old son was born at 26 weeks and weighed 2lb 2oz, no reason for his premature birth, he has delayed development and severe speech problems and attends a special needs school which i must admit has done wonders for him, his talking is coming on a treat.
i`m now pregnant with my 2nd and obviously very worried incase it happens again especially since there was no apparent reason, but fingers crossed all goes fine this time round!

Hey my Ds is 3 months old now after showing up at 32 weeks...good size at 5.1lb and was in good health had to stay in SCBU for 3 weeks just to grow really but even that seemed forever! really feel for those who had to stay in for ages!
Still no explanation for what happened! I went in with back pain, then it was a suspected kidney infection, then his heart was underactive and dropping and next minute they were slicing me open! Hes got nice and chunky in the last few week and lost his prem look but loks like 4 weeks old instead of 12!

Ds2 barely made it to preemie status at 3 1/2 weeks early. His lungs were good but he was quite jaundiced and slow to gain. After losing half a pound in the hospital we went home at 4 pounds 13 ounces. He's almost 14 months now and has caught up nicely.

DD was a 28 weeker weighing in at 2lb 11oz. I count my blessings every day, despite my current thread in parenting! She did amazingly well, is extremely mature and at 12yrs old stands 5'4", model looks and reasonable bright. Truely blessed

hiya my lo was 33 weeks and weighed 4lb he is just over 5 months old and can i add a question did anybody else get told by hv to start weaning at this point? he still only weighs 9lb12oz

Report
LiegeAndLief · 21/01/2008 13:17

Tasha, I was told by hv (and more importantly my ds's consultant) to start weaning at 6 months actual age, not corrected age. 5 months sounds a bit early. Why does she want you to start now?

hi

all 3 of mine prem - ds, now nearly 11 and dd1 (7) both 31 weekers and dd2 (22 months) a 27 weekers - all fit and healthy now. No reason for my early births although likely to be an undiagnosed blood clotting disorder. I won't be investigating any more though as having a 27 weeker was enough to put me off having another one and i am truly blessed with my lot and won't be chancing it again!

DD is just turned 7, 32 weeks with placental abruption, pneumothorax, had to have cosmetic surgery to sort out her scar a few years ago but everything is fine now.

i thought it was strange too but he has dropped in weight and wont take anymore than 4 oz in one feed i even thought 6 months actual age was too soon cause he is still tiny

Hi all.
My ds as born at 31 weeks, very anaemic, ventilated as there was no time for steroids and pretty poorly for the first week. He was in SCBU for 5 weeks and is now 6....where does it go! Strong, bright, funny, dreamy and very fit and healthy.
Not that we will evert forget it. Nice to meet everyone.

Hello everyone.

DS1 was born at 29 weeks, by emergency c-section under GA, weighing 2lb 11oz. He left hospital when I would have been 37 weeks.

I was advised and successfully did begin weaning him at 19 weeks actual age (8 weeks corrected). He only weighed about 9lbs.

14 months later DS2 was born at 41 weeks weighing 10lb!!

Hello

My DD was born following severe pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome last month at 30+6 weighing a tiny 2lb 1oz. She is now 5 wks old and weighs 3lb 2oz - doing well but still a very anxious time for us at the moment.

Absolutely everything is a worry from breastfeeding to potential developmental problems later on.

ps Hi LeigeandLeaf!

Rascal- can really empathise with you, many hugs. Do you use the Bliss messageboard at all? I found it a great help (see: www.blissmessageboard.org.uk/index.php

My DS was born at 30 weeks, 3 lb, due to pre-eclampsia & HELLP syndrome. Spent 8 weeks in SCBU but is now nearly 3 and doing fantastically, no lasting effects at all. Full of beans and a right little monkey! Makes me proud every day. My DD was born at 36 weeks again due to pre-eclampsia, 5lb 6oz, spent a week in neonatal, now 6 months old and fine apart from having cystic fibrosis She is gorgeous & am also very proud of her!
