Am really anxious about my scan on wed I will be nearly 16 weeks and have to go and see a specialist because baby had a thick nuchal fold at dating scan, didnt want amnio for personal reasons, was just wondering if someone could offer me some kind words and reassurance cos I cant stand the thought of the sonographer not saying anything for ages cos something is horribly wrong!!x

Hello, really understand how you feel, we were the same, except it was a quad blood result, also didn't want to risk an amino so bought our 20 week scan forward to 18 weeks. So relieved when the scan showed little risk of downs.

Make sure someone goes with you to the scan to support you, the person doing the scan will know if you are high risk, ours was lovely and really reassuring. We also saw the feotal care nurse after our scan to talk through how we were feeling.

IME the NHS is very over cautious when it comes to screening, so chances are you will be fine. But you will worry until then so in the meantime check out the antenatel test thread as there are ladies on the there with great advice and google ARC (antenatel results and choices) they have a helpline you can call, and were lovely when I rang.

Hope this helps and fingers crossed for a good result x

Thank you so much for replying I will have a look at those things you suggested.

Congratulations on your pregancy! When are you due?

What does quad bloods mean? The nhs didnt take any bloods from me.

I went for a private nuchal scan day after my dating scan and she meaasured it at 3.2 (NHS was 4.6) combined with my bloods came down to a 1:1136 chance.

Am really trying to think positive had a mmc in jan and thought to myself once i get to 12 week scan this pregnancy i will be able to relax!!! Oh well I suppose its not meant to be simple but it will be so worth it in the end!x

I've had scans when I've been really stressed. Ask the sonographer to say what they are doing - most where pleased to be asked to do this. Also if by yourself have a plan for afterwards - mine was to leave the hospital as fast as I could. If things need an extra check & you have other kids have a plan in place to have them collected from school/childcare. Best wishes.

That is really really good odds,it is very very unlikely that there is anything to worry about. It is stressful I know,I was referred for expert scanning with DD1 as they were worried she had a genetic condition causing her organs to enlarge. It was very stressful for the three day wait before the scan but all was fine and the sonographer was very kind and understanding.Good luck.
Also Downs is not all that terrible,a Downs child can have a happy and fulfilled life like any other, and thats all we want really, for our children.( I'm not saying that because I think your baby may have downs by the way,as your odds are so good.Mine were 1-160 for DD2, she doesn't have Downs)

Hi hellymelly

Yes they are very good odds my only worry is they will say something else is horribly wrong as downs is not the worse thing that can happen by any means.

thanks for writing back to me and putting my mind at ease I will prob be ok once i get in there its the thought of waiting outside will a full bladder dancing about evrywhere cos I cant keep still. Just want to fast forward.

Take care and thanks again x

Hi janski

I'm 25 weeks now, I had a quadruple blood test at 16 weeks, where they test for 4 different hormones in the blood and give you a statistical risk of having a chromosomal disorder such as Downs and Edwards. It was bit confusing as the first midwife I saw said I didn't need a screening test for Downs as I'm under 35, so I didn't have the nuchal fold scan at 12 weeks. But then my next midwife said oh we now do blood tests as if I was ment to have them!

Hope your scan today put your mind at rest x
