Pregnancy

Egg question that I should know the answer to...

Hi All,
I'm 35 weeks preg with number 2.
A work colleague gave me some eggs today that her chickens have laid.... is it ok to eat them cooked through or is it best to give them to DH and DS? I know they'll be yummy, but there's no 'Lion stamp' on 'proper' eggs.
Any ideas?

Depends on your attitude to risk.

as long as they are cooked preoperly with no runny yoke then they will be fine as the cooking process will kill off any salmonella bugs. The lion stamp I understand should mean that the chickens have been vaccinated against salmonella so in my book no need to cook so thoroughly

Ditto to what Hevster said. I've had a couple of runny eggs when I knew they were Lion stamped, but if they're well cooked they should be fine anyway.

I tend to have non stamped eggs and they are usually free range/organic and I personally think they are less likely to have Salmonella because they are less intensively produced (but this is just my opinion I don't know if it is fact).

Salmonella is mainly present on the outside of the shell so you can put them in boiling water before cracking if you're scrambling and that is supposed to help reduce the risk. If boiling I tend to give them a wash under the warm tap beforehand.

Ask your friend if their chickens have been innoculated. We have three hens and they have had their jabs. I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and eat ours as I know they are fine.
