Strange pulsing sound in my ear...

I am 14 weeks pg and for the last 3 weeks or so have had this incredibly irritating pulsing or whooshing sound in my left ear. I know that it is in fact my pulse but I'm just wondering why it has appeared now - and more importantly, when it will go away!

I don't remember having it with my first pg.

It's particularly annoying at night as it means I have to sleep on my left side so I can't hear it as loudly. And yes I know, is better for baby to sleep on left hand side but at this stage in pg I'd like to have a choice!

Has anyone else ever experienced this??

Hello, I had this towards the end of my pregnancy and it turned out to be high blood pressure. When did you last have your blood pressure taken? It may be worth checking.

My BP was 100/70 two weeks ago, but I might give my MW a ring if that might be the reason for it.

Someone else may come along and come up with other explanations, but i think it's a good idea to check it out.

Good luck.

My first thought was your blood pressure as well.May be a good idea to get it checked, as you don't always have symptoms with this

blood pressure, maybe. Fairly early to have BP caused by preg, but it could happen.

IMO more likely to be changing fluid balance, causing swelling in the tissues inside the ear, which is pressing on the vein and making you more aware of the pulse throbbing. Try cutting down on salt and salty foods for a couple of days and see if that helps (remember most of the salt you eat comes from ready made or proccessed foods so you might be getting too much even if you never add salt to food at the table!). I've had this as well, and change of diet got rid of it.

Or you could have an ear infection (would not have to be sore, might just feel a bit blocked up), causing pressure on the vein and making the pulse more noticable.

I had that feeling/sound in my ears in my 2nd pg weirdly. And my blood pressure was always around what yours was - which I always thought was normal/lowish. I didn't actually ever ask my GP or midwife about it. I often get it if I'm very stressed though so it wasn't a new sensation to me. I think I always wondered whether it was just the extra volume of blood you get in pg (I think?) that was whooshing around my body! Annoying for sleeping though. It stopped as soon as I gave birth. Maybe ask your midwive though.

I'd be surprised if it was BP as during my last pg (with DTs) I had consistently very low BP, but I will mention it at my next MW appt.

I've googled and it actually seems to affect a fair few people and if most often put down to just being an increased level of fluid in the body.

I hardly eat any ready made or processed food but I have been very into salty things like olives, feta and capers recently, so I will try and cut down and see if it helps.

Thanks all

I had that in my first pregnancy but not my second. It was always worse when I'd climbed the stairs etc. I had low blood pressure in both pregnancies so don't think it was that. I remember reading another thread on it ages ago and it seemed quite common.

I had it in my first pg and mentioned it to the gp, who said it was just due to the extra blood volume in the body and would go in time. It did. Very irritating though.

Lots of good advice already but I will add that I had this in pregnancy and it turned out to be dehydration - not serious and easily put right.

I just recently started up with the same problem. It's a pulsating whine in my ear that is matched to my heartbeat. I also just found out I was pregnant last week. Maybe this is associated with pregnancy although I didn't have it with my 1st three.

Hey ladies I know this is an old thread but I was just wondering if someone could offer me some advice . This is my 4th Pregnancy I have had ringing in my ears from I was 10 weeks pregnant, I'm now 15 weeks. I did have the heartbeat pulsing sound Durning my 2nd Pregnancy but this time it's more of a ringing sound I actaully would prefer the heartbeat whooshing sound . As the ringing is so draining. Can any one else offer advice x

Im 19 weeks i have had it on and off since i found out i was pregnant. It is my right ear only, only a problem when i lay down to sleep. If i lay on my left side i cant hear it. My BP is fine, spoke to GP and was told the same as @ladylush

@SantoPalo, my bp is good aswell, bloods all ok. Mine is Def noticeable in a quiet room or at nite so I use white noise. If I knew it was 100% a Pregnancy thia bit more relaxed about it. This has caused me huge distress and I'm so anxious.. x

@Nicmac01 have you spoken to your GP or midwife about this and your distress?

I spoke to my GP who was lovely and said it could range from a few things. 1. Me being Congested in my sinus area and he give me an antibiotic to try with some nasal spray. 2. Changes in the circulation due to increased blood flow and possibly hormones could be playing a part also. But when I was at the hospital for my scan I mentioned it to the obgyn doc and he completed dismissed it as a Pregnancy symptom. Now I'm left really panicking even tho when I researched ringing ears in Pregnancy it seems to be a thing. I had pulsitle tinnitus when I was pregnant with my son. It was like a heartbeat sound and a whooshing sound, definitely more easier sound than the ringing.
